GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state would begin providing monthly stipends to girl students from class 11 up to post-graduation over the next five years. This aims to prevent child marriages.
Speaking at a press conference, Sarma revealed that the scheme, named 'Nijut Moina,' had received cabinet approval. The government estimates that approximately Rs 1,500 crore will be required over five years to support around 10 lakh girls.
"A married girl will not get the benefit. The only exception will be those married girls who are enrolled in PG courses; they will also benefit," he said.
The objective of this scheme is to delay marriage so that girls can become financially independent, Sarma explained.
"The scheme will increase the gross enrollment ratio of girls substantially," he emphasized.
Girls studying in classes 11 and 12 will receive Rs 1,000 monthly. Those pursuing degree courses will get Rs 1,250, and post-graduate students will receive Rs 2,500 per month.
"Except for daughters of ministers, MLAs, and MPs, and those studying in private colleges, all girls irrespective of their financial background will be included in the scheme. In June and July, during summer vacation, no money will be given. The stipend will be deposited to the bank accounts of the students for 10 months in a year," he explained.
