GUWAHATI: Arunachal Pradesh is currently experiencing torrential rainfall, which may exacerbate the flood situation in downstream regions of Assam.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a “red warning” for several districts in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya for Friday, indicating necessity for disaster management agencies to take immediate action. Meanwhile, an “orange alert” has been issued for the remaining northeastern states, urging them to be prepared for potential adverse weather conditions.

Longding, Mebo and Pasighat — three locations in Arunachal Pradesh, have recorded the highest rainfall in the northeast over the past 24 hours, with precipitation ranging between 12 to 13 cm. The IMD, in a media release on Thursday, forecasted isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on Friday. Furthermore, the department predicted isolated very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Saturday (June 6), and over Assam and Meghalaya on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD also issued a forecast on Thursday, stating that heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rain, is highly likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on Friday. Additionally, the Met office has predicted a high probability of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Nagaland, while heavy rain is expected to occur at isolated places over Mizoram.
