Mumbai airport staffer arrested with Rs 2cr gold

MUMBAI: The Customs on Tuesday arrested an airport staffer for allegedly entering the international airport premises with 4kg gold worth over Rs 2 crore.

On the basis of the digital profiling, accused Akshay Kule who was holding airport entry pass, was detained. Examination of his bag resulted in recovery of a packet comprising 17 pieces of yellow metal bars weighing around 3,845gm valued at around Rs 2.1 crore. Officials said he has not yet revealed the name of the person who handed him gold bars to him or if he was aiding and abetting gold smugglers. He , however, admitted that he has been indulging in similar smuggling of gold by ferrying gold bars from checked-in baggage of international passengers. The AIU officials said more airport staff could be involved in the racket.
