Security ramped up on FTII campus after violent ruckus
PUNE: Pune commissioner of police (CP) Retesh Kumaarr told TOI, “We have beefed up security at the main gate of the campus and have created a fixed point to ensure no recurrence of such an act.”
The incident comes close on the heels of the FTII Students’ Association (FTIISA) releasing a statement on Jan 20 “condemning” the half-day holiday on Jan 22 to mark the consecration ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya. The posters were put up with reference to developments preceding the construction of the temple, police personnel said.
A group of over 20 entered the campus around 1.30pm, defying all attempts by the private security personnel to stop them. The intruders picked up an altercation with some students standing near the Wisdom Tree over the posters. Soon they started abusing and assaulting the students. The security personnel’s attempt to stop them went in vain.
The intruders went about burning a banner and damaging posters while raising slogans. They then left the campus. A team from the Deccan Gymkhana police reached the site on being alerted. The institute’s main gate was closed.
Injured FTII students were treated at a private hospital off Karve Road before discharge, said senior inspector Vipin Hasabnis of the Deccan Gymkhana police said.
In a statement late on Tuesday night, the FTII said, “Security personnel of the institute prevented unauthorised entry of the group. They forcefully entered and started destroying banners/boards put up by students. The local police were called immediately, but before the situation was taken under control, a few outsiders attacked some students. The police also arrived and the outsiders were taken out. A formal complaint was registered by the institute through its security officer in the matter.”
The statement read, “On the request of the institute, the police have tightened the security. A unit has been stationed outside to deal with any issue. The FTII administration has taken a serious note of the matter and is taking appropriate action in this regard.”
Deputy commissioner of police Sandeep Singh Gill told TOI, “The Sanghatana members claimed they came to know about posters and banners after they were uploaded on a social media site and this had hurt their sentiments.”
The FTIISA said in a statement, “The intruders, while sloganeering, scuffled with the association’s president, Mankap Nokwoham, who was walking towards the main gate. They left him severely injured with multiple bruises. They then turned to general secretary, Sayantan Chakrabarti, and beat him up. They also attacked a female student, who tried to intervene.”
Nokwoham said, “They rushed past security and attacked four of us brutally. It was a total breach of security.”
Sayantan said, “The security officers did not help us. They took action only after we called them. We were taken to the Deccan police station. On the way, the group resurfaced to threaten us. The director and registrar had to come. Then we went to the hospital.”
