Assembly elections in Karnataka will be held in a single phase on May 10, 2023. Counting of votes will be done on May 13, 2023.
The term of the Karnataka assembly ends on May 24, 2023.
In the 224-member Karnataka assembly, the BJP currently has 119 seats, followed by the Congress with 75. The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD (S) has 28 MLAs, while two seats are vacant.
The contest in Karnataka is largely between the BJP and the Congress. However, the JD(S) has previously demonstrated its significant influence in the state's politics, serving as a crucial component of the political machinery.
The last state assembly election was held on May 12, 2018, after which a coalition government was formed by the JD(S) and Congress. The coalition was led by HD Kumaraswamy as the chief minister.
In July 2019, the coalition government fell apart as several members of the Congress and JD (S) resigned from the assembly, leading to the formation of a new government by the BJP. BS Yediyurappa became the new chief minister.
On July 26, 2021, Yediyurappa resigned from his position as chief minister, and Basavaraj Bommai took over the reins on July 28, 2021.
