In DK Shivakumar's appointment as Deputy CM, has Congress found a win-win in Karnataka?

TOI.in / May 19, 2023, 21.05 PM IST

Celebrations have reignited in Bengaluru, and preparations for the swearing-in ceremony, which had temporarily halted, have resumed. In Delhi, the announcement brought forth some notable points. DK Shivakumar will serve as the sole deputy Chief Minister, deviating from the state's past practice of having two or sometimes three deputy CMs. Additionally, he will continue as the state's Congress President, departing from the norm advocated by Rahul Gandhi of 'one person, one post.' His tenure as state President is expected to last until the General Elections of 2024. In an interview with TOI's BV Shivashankar, the deputy CM-designate of Karnataka expressed his perspective: "It is not about compromise or power-sharing. It is about unity to form the government and fulfill the promises we made to the people. I have always believed in serving the party rather than individuals. I have consistently followed the guidance of the high command and Sonia Gandhi, whom I consider my mother. I have done the same now." The outcomes of this arrangement hold significant implications for the two leaders, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, as it will shape Siddaramaiah's legacy and DK Shivakumar's future.
