Why Ryan Gosling's 'The Nice Guys' never got a sequel

Ryan Gosling is one of the most popular and beloved actors today. Recently, he delivered a stellar performance in the live-action adaptation of Barbie, playing the iconic male doll Ken. Known for his romantic charisma and outstanding acting abilities, Gosling is also widely recognized for his role in The Nice Guys, where he co-starred with Russell Crowe. In an interview with Comic Book, Gosling revealed that a sequel to The Nice Guys is unlikely due to its underwhelming box office performance during the first week. Despite earning good reviews and showcasing a remarkable on-screen chemistry with Crowe, the film's financial returns were insufficient to justify a sequel. Gosling noted, "So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie. We started off with Angry Birds. So, Angry Birds just devastated us. Angry Birds has a sequel." Both actors were enthusiastic about a sequel, but the financial shortcomings overshadowed their interest, leaving The Nice Guys as a standalone film.
Why Ryan Gosling's 'The Nice Guys' never got a sequel
Ryan Gosling is one of the most popular and beloved actors today. Recently, he gave a stellar performance in the real-life adaptation of Barbie, playing the plastic male doll Ken. Known for his romantic charisma and outstanding acting abilities, Gosling is also widely recognized for his film, The Nice Guys, in which he co-stars with Russell Crowe.
In an interview with Comic Book, Ryan Gosling revealed that there might not be a sequel to The Nice Guys due to its performance at the box office during its first week.
Despite earning good reviews and developing an unexpected friendship on-screen with Russell Crowe's character, the film did not perform well enough financially to warrant a sequel.
Gosling explained that the prospects for a sequel were essentially wrecked by the competition from another film. He said, “So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie. We started off with Angry Birds. So, Angry Birds just devastated us. Angry Birds has a sequel.”
Both Gosling and Crowe expressed interest in the idea of a sequel, but their enthusiasm was not enough to overcome the financial shortcomings. Despite their interest, The Nice Guys remains a standalone film.
During the promotion of his film The Fall Guy, which was released in May, Gosling shared these insights. The Fall Guy, based on the 1980s television drama of the same name starring Lee Majors, features Gosling and Emily Blunt. In this film, Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a jobless stunt performer who is invited by his ex-girlfriend to perform stunts for her big-budget Hollywood directorial debut. The plot follows Colt as he navigates Hollywood's dark underbelly to rescue a missing action star, save the film, and prove his worth as the best stuntman around, all while hoping to reunite with his former love.
