Indian weddings are incomplete without tracks that keep people grooving. From timeless English classic rock, Punjabi dance numbers... Read More
‘Classics are always in demand’
While trending tracks come and go, the classics continue to make people happy. DJ Sahil Madan tells us, “At weddings, people love to listen to songs that they can sing along. My top three tracks that never fail are Ishq Tera Tadpave, Sheila Ki Jawani and London Thumakda. The setlist totally depends on the clientele, but one of the most requested songs is still Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se.” He adds that couples are only particular about the songs they want to perform to.

‘South Indian music is as popular as Bollywood’
Shilka Abraham, a wedding planner, shares, “A lot of TikTok tracks are trending nowadays. People put these tracks together for sangeet performances. Often, it’s a mix of tracks by Punjabi artists like AP Dhillon, Badshah and some old school tracks by Sukhbir – all remixed together. People get choreographers to put it together specifically for the performances. As for the hottest tracks this season, Naatu Naatu, Oo Antava and other songs from Pushpa, are popular in all communities. South Indian music is as popular as Bollywood music now.”

‘Up to date with music’
Aneesh Vidyshankar, the walking violinist who also performs at weddings, says, “When it comes to music, people are up to date. Everyone has access to streaming platforms and as a result, they all know what the trending tracks are in different languages. So for my performance, I include all top songs in English, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada as well.” He shares that some of the trending tracks are Bones by Imagine Dragons, Kesariya, Tum Tum and Srivalli. “Everything is about Instagram now. If a track goes viral, people want to hear it at weddings. So I pick songs that are trending on social media.”

‘Language is no bar for famous songs’
Varsha Jayalakshmi, a sangeet choreographer says weddings don’t have a regional playlist anymore. “These days, people from several states come together and they all want songs they know. We perform Zingaat in Malayali weddings, Thudakkam Maangalyam in Tamil weddings, Naatu Naatu in almost every other wedding. Songs like Vaathi Coming, Ranjithame, Dippam Dappam are hits
everywhere.”
