#FathersDay: I pamper my sons little more than my wife does: Gippy Grewal
A leading star of the Punjabi film landscape, and one of the first Punjabi actors to crossover to Bollywood too in lead roles, at home Gippy Grewal is an emotional buddy to his three sons. In a first interview about his sons, Gippy shares with us his sentiments about his boys fondly calling them, "my three precious gems," on Father's Day.
What kind of relationship do you share with your sons, are you a strict father or a friend?

I always believe a parent, especially a father, should first be a friend to his children.
I know the common perception is that fathers have to do the disciplining and mothers are the emotional anchors. But I don't think that holds true for modern parenting and that paradigm has evolved now with contemporary challenges of raising kids exposed to so much information from across the world. Awareness is key for both children and parents, while parenting. My wife and I as parents maintain a balance of friendship and discipline. In fact, since I am usually short of time to spend with them owing to my profession, I end up spoiling them and pampering them with little more indulgence than Ravneet (his wife).

Tell us about your bonding with the three sons? Do you set an example as a role model for them?

I share an emotional bond with my three sons, I teach them some life lessons and they teach me some in return. I am so grateful to god for blessing me with such good children who are not brats despite their privileged upbringing. All of them have inculcated upright morals and family values, which they will pass down the lineage. I try to model ideal behaviour for my sons to follow, both in actions and words. Rest, how they turn out when they grow up, is their own destiny.

Do you actively parent your sons? Or, you don't get much time?

Since time is always a constraint for me, I regret being unable to spend as much time with them as I would love to. But now with my younger son, Gurfateh aka Shinda turning to acting, (they acted together in the Punjabi film Shinda Shinda No Papa), and my oldest Ekom being on the shooting sets assisting in direction, I'm able to spend more time with them. Both Ekom and Shinda are making us all proud of them. While my youngest, Gurbaaz is still very small and is living it up in all his childhood naughtiness, which we cherish greatly.
