NEW DELHI: Southwest (summer) monsoon covered the entire country on Tuesday, six days before its normal date, said India Meteorological Department on Tuesday. It’s the third consecutive year in which the monsoon covered the entire country by July 2.

The onset of monsoon over Kerala and most parts of northeast happened simultaneously on May 30 ahead of its normal date of June 1 and June 5, respectively. It covered the entire country in 34 days despite its sluggish progress during June 10-18. Normally, monsoon covers the entire India in 38 days .

Early/delayed onset or early/delayed coverage, however, doesn’t impact quantitative or spatial aspects of rainfall during the four-month monsoon season. It, however, guides the progress of kharif (summer sown crops such as paddy, sugarcane, coarse cereals and cotton) sowing operations and choice of crops as farmers have to take a call on the basis of the irrigation cycle a crop may need.

IMD records show that this is the seventh time in the past 12 years and 14th time in the past 25 years that the monsoon covered the entire country ahead of time, with the earliest one being recorded in 2013 when it did so as early as June 16 — the day country witnessed a major disaster in Kedarnath (Uttarakhand).

Monsoon normally starts retreating from northwest India around Sept 17 and fully withdraws by Oct 15. Besides farming activities, water and hydro-power management also depends on the onset, coverage and withdrawal of monsoon.

Though June recorded nearly 11% deficit rainfall in the country, it did not affect the overall acreage last month due to adequate pace of sowing operations in peninsular India which reported over 14% more than normal rainfall in the month.

Agriculture ministry data shows that the overall acreage of all kharif crops put together in the country as on June 28 was 240 lakh hectares which was 59 lakh hectares more than the acreage during the corresponding period last year. It happened due to higher acreage of the less water consuming crops — pulses and oilseeds — last month.

We did not win it, south Africa gifted it to us on a platter. The fact is Kohli almost buried all our chances with his 70 of 59 odd balls.(almost 10 overs/1/2th innings,@ of less than 7rpo). It was Axar and hardik at other end who made the score near par (actually 180 was par). Then till the 15th over we had lost the match, till Bumrah did his magic and let loose the terror of choking amongst the south africans. Thank god virat retired. His 70 odd in 58 balls would have been a death knell for the team if not youngsters like Axar hardik, SKY and bumrah had not saved the day. Once again Rohit Pant and other celebrity stars flopped in a crucial final while Viraat suffocated the team scoring rate to pursue his half century, but the youngsters saved us. Viraat Rohit and KL Rahul all three should have been out of the short format versions at least after 2022, yet the selection committe has been pusillanimous about that. Hope fully they would show some guts this time and ask rohit & Viraat to retire honourably by the end of the year from ODI also. If you notice there has been a pattern in all finals since 2014 (when Kohli hit a 70odd in 50 ball, Yuvraj made 11 in 22) and we lost to Sri Lanka. In every final one or two of these trio or the celebrity stars flops miserably and the remaining immediately goes into a shell not to get out and damage their average and brand, putting pressure on younger inexperienced team mates. The difference this time was Axar and Pandya hit at over10 runs an over to take us just below par. They are the true heroes because if they cared about their wickets and personal score, we would have ended up at 140 to 150. Even the 175 was undefendable till Bumrah did his magic in the 16th over and SKY did his catch. I feel in the last 10 years the celebrity culture has resulted in selectors selecting selfish players and hoping the captain will not play them and vice versa the captain thinking why should I bear the brick bats let the selectors drop them. Except probably Gavaskar, every so called legend has played on for a couple of more years more than due, just to safeguard their brand and image.
