Rahul Gandhi was at his combative best while delivering his first speech in Parliament as the LoP. But taking the reconciliatory route could have proved more beneficial in the long run
In his maiden speech as a newly minted Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Rahul Gandhi spoke a lot. On July 1 in Parliament, during the motion of thanks to the President’s address, he spoke for over 100 minutes. One wondered if that was an unmistakable verbal excess or an absolute necessity.
There will be cheerleaders on either side of the aisle who will take extreme positions on Rahul’s speech. Politics has anyway come to function on narrow binaries across the globe for some years now. The Trump-Biden binary played out last week. The Marine Le Pen-Macron binary has taken a new dimension in France. The rest of Europe has not been left out of the experience. It was more than evident in recent weeks when the European parliament elected new members.
