When it comes to body building many of us swear by packaged protein supplements, as they help us meet the daily requirement of protein intake. But, many of us don't know that there are market players who offer misleading claims on such protein supplements and it can lead to major health issues too. To protect the consumer interest, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has now released strict regulations on protein supplements.

Why is the FSSAI issuing strict rules for protein supplement brands?
As per reports, this move was made by the FSSAI after they did a study that showed many protein powders and supplements sold at store shelves, e-commerce platforms, and gymnasiums came with false and misleading claims.
And now the new regulation might lead to banning of many such brands which do not meet the norms.

Why are brands misleading people?
Thanks to social media and celebrities there has been a swift rise in protein consumption and that has led to a wide range of steeply priced protein supplements on e-commerce platforms that sell protein supplements of sub-standard quality at cheaper rate and such powders might give rise to other health issues.

How bad is the situation with protein powders currently?
As per a study published in the journal named Medicine, which analysed 36 popular protein supplements sold in India showed that nearly 70% of them had wrong protein information, with some brands offering only half of what they claim. Apart from this, around 14% of them contained harmful fungal aflatoxins, while 8% showed traces of pesticide residue.

What are the side effects of sub-standard protein supplements
As per experts, the sub-standard protein supplements contain liver toxic botanicals that can lead to major health issues. Take a look at their side effects.
Digestive issues: They can lead to bloating, gas, constipation, and diarrhea, particularly with whey protein, which contains lactose.
Kidney damage: They are also said to put strain on kidneys, especially in individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions. And high protein intake increases the kidneys' workload as they process and eliminate nitrogen, a byproduct of protein metabolism.

Liver issue: They might also put strain on liver and lead to damage in individuals with pre-existing liver conditions. The liver is involved in metabolizing protein, and excessive intake can strain the liver.
Dehydration: They are also associated with increased risk of dehydration. As per experts, high protein intake can increase water loss through urine as the body processes excess nitrogen.
Nutrient imbalance: Over-reliance on protein supplements may lead to neglecting other important nutrients found in whole foods.
Allergy: Allergic reactions such as hives, itching, and swelling are also associated with such supplements. They can also lead to unintended weight gain, because excessive calorie intake from protein supplements, especially if not balanced with physical activity can lead to obesity or weight gain.
Hormonal imbalance: It is said that protein supplements can lead to hormonal imbalances, particularly with soy-based protein supplements. They contain phytoestrogens, which can mimic the hormone estrogen in the body.
Heavy metal contamination: They are also said to expose the body to harmful heavy metals. Some protein supplements have been found to contain trace amounts of heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium, and they are not good for the body.
