With summer comes the tension and worry of the precious plants drying out. The leaves become hard and fall out, the flowers darken, and the soil is left in splits. So, here are a few ways to prevent the dying and drying spell.

The fact that the soil dries quickly and that overwatering is also harmful can really put people in a dilemma. So, try this out - Take a bottle and on its cap make a small hole. Now, fill the bottle and put it cap-side down in the soil. This will make the water drip slowly.

The afternoon sun is not just bad for humans, but also for the plants. So, try to water them as early as possible, preferably before 10 AM. This will give the soil ample time to absorb the water before the scorching sun comes out.

During the peak sun hours, add in some mulch to the plants. One of the best options is to spread around the same leaves that dried due to the sun and fell out.

Not every plant can live in the extreme sun and heat. So, only keep the ones that can survive the heat outside. Plants such as succulents, and cactus can actually endure the scorching sun.

In a fear that the plant would die and dry because of heat, people often make the mistake of overwatering. But, please remember that the roots can always be subject to root-rot because of overwatering.

A very underrated technique to save the plants is by protecting them with clothes. When the sun is on its peak and you fear that the leaves will dry out, just put some cotton clothes over the plants which will prevent direct contact with sun rays.

A dry soil can result in a drying plant and it is inevitable because of the harsh sun. So, ask your local gardener or nursery about moisture-retaining soil.

Fertilisers give the plants ‘extra push’ to grow. But, during the peak hours, the focus of the plant should not be on growing new flowers and leaves, but rather just ensuring that it doesn't dry out. So, don’t fertilise the plants for a certain time.

To ensure that the leaves and flowers remain hydrated and the soil does not spoil, spray water on the leaves, flowers, and branches. This will make sure that the plant is hydrated but not enough for the roots to rot.

During the summers, it is best to not add new plants to the garden. Growing plants use all of their energy to push out flowers and leaves but they might go to waste.
