The voice used in a majority of the horror movies to portray a distant bird and its cry is the voice of the common loon. It straight up sounds haunting and mournful and is even more eerie when it echoes.

Another bird with a rather haunting voice is the barn owl. It has a long, hissing scream that can be quite unsettling. In fact, the cry of the owl can almost sound like a human in distress, which makes it even more spooky.

The eastern whip-poor-will has a sound exactly like its name. This bird repeats its name in a ghostly, repetitive chant: ‘whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will.’

Evident in the name, screech owls have a variety of calls, but their eerie trills can be quite spooky. The high-pitched, trembling notes can make people feel uncomfortable even during day hours.

This bird has a call similar to a duck but is more harsh and deep. The night heron’s call is like a croaking ‘quawk’ call and can be startling when heard suddenly.

Another voice made familiar by the movies is one of the great horned owls. It is known for its deep, haunting hoots that almost sound like ‘whoo, whoo’.

The tawny frogmouth owls do not just have eerie calls, they also are experts in camouflaging. So, when you hear their voice, which is a repetitive ‘oom-oom-oom’ call, and can't even spot where it is coming from, it can be spooky.
