TOISA 2021: Jasprit Bumrah and Smriti Mandhana win Cricketer of the Year award

NEW DELHI: Swashbuckling India batter Smriti Mandhana and tearaway fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah won the cricketer of the year Award at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2021. The awards were given away at a glittering ceremony on Friday to mark the fifth edition of TOISA.

The evaluation period for TOISA 2021 was from January 1 to December 31, 2021. All achievements during this time period were considered by the jury.

This time the esteemed TOISA jury included the likes of cricket all-rounder and member of the 1983 World Cup winning team Madan Lal, Olympic medal winning shooter Gagan Narang, former hockey captain and Haryana sports minister Sandeep Singh, veteran Indian athlete Anju Bobby George who was the first Indian athlete to win an athletics World Championships medal, Paralympic Games silver medallist Deepa Malik and Olympic medal winning boxer Vijender Singh.

In the men's category, India skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Mohammed Shami, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja were Bumrah's fellow nominees while in women's cricket, Smriti pipped bowling all-rounder Sneh Rana, opener Shafali Verma and now-retired Jhulan Goswami for the the award.
Pace spearhead Bumrah had a decent 2021 with 30 wickets in 9 Test matches. Bumrah also became the fastest Indian pacer to take 100 Test wickets in his 24th match, surpassing the legendary Kapil Dev. He was also the highest wicket-taker of the India-England series with 23 wickets in 5 matches with the 5th rescheduled Test being played earlier this year.

The right-arm pacer ended the year on a high by taking five wickets in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa that helped India clinch 113-run victory.

When it comes to white ball cricket, Bumrah did not feature in an ODI in the year 2021. He played 5 T20Is that all came in the T20 World Cup, taking 7 wickets at an impressive economy rate of just 5.08.

On the other hand, ICC women's cricketer of the year for 2021 is the testament to Mandhana's stellar run of form across all formats in the year. Mandhana has scored 851 runs in 22 internationals at an average of 38.68 with one century and five half-centuries in 2021.

She was the highest scorer in Tests overall with 244 runs in two matches at a staggering average of 61. Mandhana smashed her maiden century in the longest format in India's first-ever pink-ball Test against Australia.

Mandhana scored 352 runs in 11 ODIs at an average of 35.20 to become second highest scorer behind Mithali Raj. She also fared well in the shortest format of the game by scoring 255 runs in nine matches.

In the limited-overs series against South Africa where India won just two of the eight matches at home, Mandhana played a major role in both of the wins. She made 80 not out as India chased down 158 in the second ODI that helped them level the series and scored 48 not out in the win in the final T20I.

The 25-year-old played a sublime innings of 78 in the first innings of the one-off Test against England that ended in a draw. She played an important knock of 49 in India's only win in the ODI series.
