NEW DELHI: Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram suffered a costly blunder in the seventh round of the Sharjah Masters, resulting in a loss to Bardiya Daneshvar of Iran and relinquishing his lead in the tournament.

Aravindh's slip from the top spot saw him fall to joint third position, as American Sam Shankland defeated his compatriot Hans Moke Niemann to equal the Iranian's points tally.

The Indian had been performing exceptionally well until the critical error occurred. It appeared to be a promising situation for Aravindh, but he faltered at the crucial moment.

The tactical exchange that followed should have still favored Aravindh, but a late mistake sealed the game in the Iranian's favour.

Fellow Indian player Arjun Erigaisi was unable to penetrate the solid defenses of Iran's Parham Maghsoodloo and had to content himself with a draw.

This result left Erigaisi trailing the leading pair of Daneshwar and Shankland by half a point.
