'The doors are not closed...': Rohit Sharma on experienced players' future in India Test setup

NEW DELHI: India's captain Rohit Sharma hinted at a significant shift in the team's approach, suggesting that the Test careers of veterans Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane might not see a revival.
The captain emphasized the need to provide more opportunities to younger players, signaling a move toward grooming the next generation.
While the absence of Virat Kohli in the first two matches against England sparked discussions about including experienced players like Pujara or Rahane, the current selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, seems determined to focus on youth.

India opted to bring in Rajat Patidar as Kohli's replacement, emphasizing the intention to provide chances to emerging talents.
"Leaving out an experienced player or not considering them is very hard. The amount of runs they've scored, the kind of experience they've had, the amount of games they have won for us, you know, it's very hard to ignore all of that," Rohit expressed understanding for the contributions of senior players in a press conference ahead of the first Test against England.

However, he highlighted the importance of giving opportunities to younger players, particularly in favorable conditions, to nurture their potential.
Patidar, who showcased outstanding form in recent matches, including a century in a practice game and a majestic 151 for India A against England Lions, was chosen as Kohli's replacement.
The 30-year-old middle-order batter has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, accumulating over 4000 runs at a noteworthy average of 45 with 12 centuries in First-Class cricket.
While Rohit acknowledged that the doors to the Indian team were not closed for anyone and players could make comebacks based on fitness and performance, his words strongly indicated a strategic shift in team selection.

The age factor of the veterans, including Rohit himself (36), Virat Kohli (35), R. Ashwin (37), and Ravindra Jadeja (35), appears to be a consideration in shaping the future of the team.
"By no means, the doors are closed for anyone, you know, as long as they stay fit and keep scoring runs. Anyone will be welcomed back into the setup," assured Rohit, leaving room for potential returns.
However, the captain emphasized the importance of balancing experienced players with emerging talents, ensuring a harmonious blend for the future of Indian cricket.
