NEW DELHI: India suffered a crushing 0-5 defeat against Argentina in their opening match of the FIH Women's Pro League European leg in Antwerp, Belgium on Wednesday.
The Argentines dominated the game from the start, with goals from Agustina Gorzelany (13th), Valentina Raposo (24th), Victoria Miranda (41st), and a brace from Julieta Jankunas (53rd, 59th).
The Indian team, playing their first match under new coach Harendra Singh, struggled to create any significant scoring opportunities in the first half.
Surprisingly, veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia was not included in the starting lineup, with Bichu Devi Kharibam taking her place between the posts.
Argentina showcased their creativity and attacking prowess, earning seven penalty corners in the first two quarters alone. They capitalized on their second penalty corner through Gorzelany's flick to the left of Bichu.
Despite a slightly improved performance in the second quarter, India conceded another goal from Raposo's variation strike from Argentina's fifth penalty corner.
The third quarter saw India play with more speed and intent, making some promising circle penetrations. However, they lacked the finishing touch to convert their chances.
Argentina, on the other hand, extended their lead through Miranda's reverse hit goal, leaving Bichu helpless.
Jankunas put the final nail in the coffin with two well-executed field goals in the span of six minutes, sealing a comprehensive victory for Argentina.
The Indian women will aim to bounce back when they face hosts Belgium on Thursday.
