CLAIMSeveral Indian social media users are sharing an image of a train with Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s poster pasted on its front to claim that the US paid tribute to India’s first law minister by putting up his photo as well as ‘Jai Bheem’ flags on its longest-distance train.
Criticizing the Indian government for not doing something like this,a loose translation of the text accompanying the image reads, “America has done what India couldn’t. Babasaheb’s poster was put up on the USA's longest distance train. But India’s Manuwadi media will never show this news.”
The image is being shared across social media platforms with the same claim.
TRUTHNo such tribute was paid to Ambedkar by the US. The image is a digitally-altered version of the original photo which shows a Delhi Metro train number 1414 at a platform.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYOn running keyword search via different search engines, we could not find any credible news reports or photographs of the USA pasting photos of Ambedkar on a train.
On closely observing the image being circulated, we found it bears the number 1414 on the top right corner of the train.
Then using reverse-image search, we traced the original photo published by several news websites. The original image shows a Delhi Metro coach and had no such posters of Ambedkar. It is clear that this image was morphed to make the claims above.
India TV carried the original image in a
report dated December 24, 2016. The post uses the photograph as a representational image and doesn’t credit any photographer for the same.
Similarly many other renowned news portals carried this image as a representation image.
VERDICTTimes Fact Check has found that a digitally-altered image of a Delhi Metro train is being used to falsely claim that the US paid tribute to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar by putting up his poster on its longest-distance train.
