In an unexpected turn, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's budget speech lasted a mere 56 minutes, earning her applause from the treasury benches for its brevity. This marked a significant departure from her record-breaking two-hour-and-forty-minute presentation in 2020, showcasing a notable shift in the duration of her annual addresses over the years. Clad in a striking turquoise-colored embroidered Kantha silk saree, Sitharaman delivered her sixth consecutive budget. While opposition members listened attentively, they expressed disapproval at certain points, particularly in response to Sitharaman's mention of her government's return to power. In contrast, Hirubhai Mulljibhai Patel set a historic record in 1977 with the shortest Union Budget speech ever, containing a mere 800 words, driven by strategic considerations anticipating a comprehensive budget in July.On the contrary, Manmohan Singh holds the record for the lengthiest budget speech in 1991, delivering an extensive 18,650 words during a pivotal economic year. Sitharaman, following her tradition since 2019, used a 'bahi-khata' with the national emblem to carry her speech and documents on a tablet computer. The President, Droupadi Murmu, extended best wishes and offered Sitharaman a symbolic spoonful of curd and sugar, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her at the conclusion of the speech.
