Vale Indonesia leads the way in sustainable mining with hydroelectric power

Mining companies are increasingly working to reduce their carbon emissions and transition to cleaner energy sources due to pressure from downstream customers and the need for more sustainable supply chains. For example, Vale Indonesia runs its smelters on hydroelectricity, reducing emissions by over 1.115 million tons of CO2 annually. However, the transition away from fossil fuels in mining operations faces challenges such as the initial cost of renewable infrastructure and the reliance on LNG, which still emits greenhouse gases. Investor and consumer demand for sustainability is key to driving these changes.
