Protests for Amritpal in London, Met cops dubbed racist, Indians doing well in UK

In this episode of the podcast, we discuss new British census data that says Indians are high performers when it comes to owning property, getting an education and a job; a damning review of the London police; and the continuing protests in the British capital by Khalistan supporters against the police crackdown on Amritpal Singh in India.Khalistan supporters’ protestA second protest was held on Wednesday. This one was advertised in advance. Police had put barricades around the high commission so the protesters were on the opposite side of the road. It started off with a relatively small group holding Khalistan flags; somebody was speaking through a microphone telling them why they were. Jagtar Singh Johal seemed to be a big issue among this crowd. He is a Scottish Sikh who's been detained in India awaiting trial. They all seemed to be his supporters and also they all seemed to be supporters of Amritpal Singh. After the incident on Sunday when Khalistan supporters tried to pull down the Tricolour at the high commission, there is now a large Indian flag hanging over the building. The Khalistan protest swelled later, because quite a number of them had come on coaches from different parts of Britain. By this time the atmosphere had changed and people seemed more hostile, angrier. The protest carried on for hours and projectiles such as eggs were hurled at the high commission building. What damage has the Indian high commission suffered?On Tuesday, some members of the Indian community held a solidarity gathering outside the high commission. They played different songs, Bollywood tracks and songs like Jai Ho and they were dancing and holding the Indian flag. All the windows on the lower floor of the high commission have all got huge cracks in them. They’re fortified glass; they would have shattered otherwise. In the glass front-door of the high commission there are cracks on both sides. Some windows that were damaged in the previous attack in 2019 also still haven't been repaired. The UK foreign secretary has agreed to review the security at the Indian high commission, the move coming after some of the barricades were removed outside the British high commission in Delhi. London police are racist, says review Baroness Casey, a crossbench peer, was asked to do an investigation into the culture within the Metropolitan Police, the police force that covers London and has about 47,000 police officers. The report was ordered after the rape, kidnapping and murder of Sarah Everard in March 20-21, 2023 by a serving police officer. Also, more recently, another serving police officer in the unit which carries firearms -- that protects Parliament and some diplomatic missions -- David Carrick admitted to 48 rapes of 12 women over 20 years. These two incidents spurred this report, which found institutional racism, misogyny, homophobia and sexism within the police force. The police have said they are going to try and reform the force. The nearly 400-page report had different sections, including a large one on racism. It showed a culture where there is a lot of banter and a lot of comments might be made that somebody would feel really offended by. If a woman got promoted, it would be like who did she sleep with. If somebody who was black got promoted, was that just because of positive discrimination. The report also spoke about ‘initiation tests’ and said that there have been a number of incidents where Sikh officers are picked on. One officer had his beard cuts because an officer thought it was funny. Another officer had his turban put into a shoe box because they thought it was funny. A Muslim officer said that he found pork left in his boots inside his locker. Apparently when people register complaints about such matters they get disregarded and the complainants are ostracised. Indians doing well in UKIndians are at the top in the UK when it comes to home ownership. According to the Office of National Statistics’ analysis of census data, 71% of Indians own a house in UK, followed by 68% of white British. Also, the Indian community comes second in terms of education -- after the Chinese community, 56% of whom have A Level qualification or higher – with 52% of the Indian community has A level qualification or higher education. When it comes to employment, Other Whites (non British) are on top with 63%, and then it’s the White English at 62% followed by Indian at 61%. In comparison, employment is less in the Pakistani community (41%) and the Bangladeshi community (43%). The Indian and Chinese communities came out jointly top when it comes to professional occupations -- like doctors, teachers, lawyers. The healthiest community is the mixed race white and Asian community at 67% followed by African at 65%. The survey noticed that Bangladeshi community was surprisingly performing less well on the health front even though they had a very young median age.
