What is an echo chamber?

Are you in an echo chamber? A digital echo chamber is when everything on your feed reflects only your interests and views without exposing you to new or differing opinions.

This can make us feel that everyone thinks the same as us and only reinforces what we already think, and contributes to the spreading of fake news on social media.

How do echo chambers work?

Echo chambers are built around online communities and depends on the accounts you follow and the posts you interact with on social media.

We asked our Confession Pod celebrities: magician and Youtuber Dan Rhodes, presenter and influencer Zara McDermott, comedian Russell Kane, body positive influencer Miah Carter, musician Wes Nelson and disability rights activist and TikToker India Sasha, what their echo chambers look like.

What is the problem with echo chambers?

Well Russell Kane and the other celebs answer this.

The celebs are exposed to their own echo chambers and debate whether their feeds truly reflect them, or if the algorithm pushes things towards them!

To avoid falling into an echo chamber that is cut off from wider discussion you should always check multiple news sources for more objective information.

Watch the film and then discuss with your classmates or friends how your echo chamber might be influencing how you think about things.
