Wiese stars in super over as Namibia beat Oman

David Wiese starred with bat and ball as Namibia survived a scare before eventually edging a battling Oman after a dramatic super over in Bridgetown.

The 39-year-old clubbed 13 runs off four balls to help Namibia post 21-0 in their super over, before bowling Oman's reply and restricting them to 10-1.

Wiese had earlier taken 3-28 as Oman were skittled out for 109, with Ruben Trumpelmann taking a career-best 4-21 that included two wickets with the first two balls of the match.

Namibia eased to 73-3 after 14 overs, but some superb death bowling from Mehran Khan, who took 3-7, turned a routine chase into a scramble for the line.

With Namibia needing five runs to win off the final over, Mehran took two wickets with the first three deliveries to set up what would have been a stunning victory.

With four needed from two balls a straight drive from Wiese cannoned into the stumps at the non-striker's end and allowed Namibia to run two, before a scrambled leg bye off the final ball saw them limp to 109-6.

This was just the third time a T20 World Cup match went to a super over and the first since 2012.

Veteran all-rounder Wiese played for South Africa between 2013 and 2016, before switching allegiance to Namibia in time for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

He rattled a four through the covers off the first ball of the super over, before smashing a full toss next ball for six.

A two and a single followed, before Gerhard Erasmus smashed back-to-back boundaries to help Namibia post an imposing 21 off the bowling of Bilal Khan.

Wiese then showed his experience with the ball, bowling full and straight to dismiss Naseem Khushi as Namibia triumphed.

Oman's next match is against Australia in Barbados on Thursday, with Namibia taking on Scotland at the same venue later that day.

Monday's game sees South Africa take on Sri Lanka in New York at 15:30 BST.

Namibia all-rounder and player of the match David Wiese: "I definitely aged a couple of years tonight. And I don't have a lot of years left in me so have to take it easy. It was an emotionally draining evening."

Oman captain Aqib Ilyas: "We would have enjoyed the game more had we won, but credit goes to our team, we fought well despite having such a low target."

On the decision to bowl Bilal in the super over: "Bilal is one of the best bowlers you can have at this level. But there are days where you plan and it doesn't execute."

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus: "It was a tough one on a tough wicket like that. You shouldn't be letting the guys stress it at the end. You should take responsibility when you've got 15 or 20 balls under the belt and you know the rhythm of the pitch."
