Thanks for your question. There is a paleo-style rock garden in front of the museum building, although I've not seen anyone digging in it. There is also ongoing 'digging' of already unearthed specimens (clearing the matrix around larger fossils, as an Allosaurus skull has been worked about 1/2 way from its sandstone) but these are done by adults, usually paleontologists like Dr. Robert Bakker on Saturdays. Less than two miles north, at the west side of Dinosaur Ridge, there are still fossils in the quarry that you can readily see. These have been purposely left exposed for anyone to observe, but there are not efforts to dig them out further. Depending on your son's age, Dinosaur Ridge has kid- friendly dig pits (2) where younger kids can 'unearth' a mock-up life-size fossil of a duckbill dinosaur, as well as a sand pit to find small sharks' teeth, fossil shells, and the like. For teens and older, both facilities have scheduled activities: check their websites. You can give the the Ridge a call at 303 697-3466, 10am-4pm. Hope this helps.
