Indian women are increasingly choosing Australia for higher studies, with 41% of women opting for it in the latest intake. It is evident that Australia is a top destination for young women seeking quality education, research, and global career opportunities, given its reputation as a safe, welcoming, and supportive country. The percentage of women among Indians going to Australia for higher education has been on a steady rise, growing from 38% in 2019-20 to 45% in 2023-24, showcasing Australia's consistent recognition globally for its research excellence, liveability, learner satisfaction, and employment outcomes.
Monica Kennedy, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner at Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) said, &ldquo;The growth in female students from India is an indication of the trust that families place in Australia as a warm, welcoming, safe and secure destination for study. With a commitment to international students&rsquo; experience while undertaking world-class qualifications, Australia is increasingly the preferred option for families across the world.&rdquo;
The recently announced QS World University Rankings 2024 have brought remarkable recognition to Australian universities, with three of them &ndash; University of Melbourne (14), UNSW (19), and University of Sydney (19) - making it to the global top 20 universities. UniMelb leads a set of impressive list of universities Caltech, Yale, Peking, and Princeton, securing an impressive all-time high ranking at #14.
With nine Australian universities in the top 100, and 95% of them globally ranked, Australia offers global opportunities for students to excel in their careers. Choosing Australia for higher education can provide young women with the necessary tools and skills to succeed in their careers and make a positive impact in the world.
The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) has opened avenues for collaborations between educational institutions in India and Australia. It also extends special privileges to Indian students aspiring to study in Australia with a focus on skill development and enhanced employability.

Study in Australia: 41% Indian women opted for Australian varsities in the latest intake

A new study has found that migrants are driving the Australian economy, earning well above the median salary just a few months after settlement and filling roles in critical sectors. The research by&nbsp;Pearson, a global learning company, also revealed that this contribution is likely fuelled by Australia's reputation for high-quality education, which is the primary motivator for 72% of Indian students choosing Australia for migration.
Skill shortage
Australia is facing several challenges including a skills shortage, made worse by issues like an aging population and declining productivity growth. The Government&rsquo;s Migration Strategy, released in December 2023, reveals a number of crucial needs, including highly skilled migrants and lower-skilled workers who are needed for critical sectors such as care industries.
In line with the Migration Strategy, the Pearson&nbsp;Migrant and Student Study&nbsp;(PMASS) found migrants who had taken the PTE were comparable to the Government&rsquo;s CSAM test respondents, and more likely to be employed in crucial fields. Over double the number of these test-takers were in aged and disabled care compared to the general population (3.6% versus 1.4%), four times more were registered nurses (8.6% versus 2.1%), and seven times more were in software and applications programmers (6.3% versus 0.9%).
The survey also shed light on the key drivers that make India a leading source country for Australian migrants. Here are some key indicators:

<li>&nbsp;Australia's reputation as a safe and welcoming environment (58%) is another significant pull factor</li>
<li>Furthermore, the promising employment prospects available post-graduation (43%) further contribute to the appeal of Australia as a desirable destination for Indian migrants</li>
</ul>
Growing contribution
The study shows migrants&rsquo; contribution to the economy also grows over time, with PTE test takers earning a median $93K per annum six months post settlement, well above the national median income of $73K. This has a flow-on effect to the broader economy, as recent OECD reports suggest areas with higher inflows of migrants gain an economic benefit of $1.5K per person and see a rise in productivity levels.
Sasha Hampson, VP, PTE Global Stakeholder Relations at Pearson&nbsp;shared, &ldquo;At a time when native skills are declining, skilled migrants and international students, who themselves will likely become skilled workers, are a beacon of hope for Australia&rsquo;s economy and way of life.&rdquo;
Reciprocal benefit
Additional findings from the research also highlights the reciprocal benefit to migration - the value that migrants see in Australia - and concurrently, the value migrants add to the Australian economy and social fabric.&nbsp;
● Migrants value their life in Australia: 8 out of 10 (84%) say Australia has met or exceeded their expectations, and female migrants are significantly more likely to value the independence they get from living in Australia (11% versus 5% of men).
● Migrants are hopeful for their future in Australia: Migrants&rsquo; goals are achievable for study visa holders because of quality education facilities (21%), good job opportunities (17%), employment/career progression (16%), education (10%) and other factors
● Learning English is essential to positive migrant experiences: 97% of PTE test takers agree that learning English is important as part of their life in Australia, with over two thirds agreeing it is important because it helped them understand Australian rules and regulations (67%), helped them get work (66%) and increased ties to the wider community (63%), among other reasons.
Sasha Hampson explained: &ldquo;Skilled workers and international students are essential to Australia&rsquo;s economy, education system and way of life. This research evidences the positive contributions they provide to Australia and to our collective understanding of the &lsquo;Australian Dream&rsquo;.&rdquo;

72% of Indian students choose Australia for migration driven by its quality education: Study

<div>Sanjoli Bannerjee believes in walking the talk when it comes to raising awareness about the issues that are closer to her heart. This 24-year-old student of the University of Wollongong (UoW), Australia, has been accompanying her parents to protests for social causes since she was five.</div>
<div>Born and brought up in Haryana, currently, Sanjoli is pursuing Master of Social Work (MSW) at UoW to pursue roles in health and community services in India and abroad. &ldquo;While I was pursuing graduation, I realised that raising awareness about the issues affecting society is not just an interest or a hobby, and I want to pursue it full-time. I wish to dedicate my life to the service of people,&rdquo; says Sanjoli, adding, &ldquo;I want to make an impact and be a part of the process where people are empowered as individuals.&rdquo;</div>

<div>Her father started the &lsquo;Save Daughters&rsquo; campaign to raise awareness against female foeticide and Sanjoli became an ambassador for driving social change through activism. &nbsp;She visited a refugee school while attending a Harvard Conference in Kuala Lumpur, studied in the UK on exchange and got introduced to spirituality in the same year. &ldquo;Since then, I never looked back and gradually took over the leadership of the organisation,&rdquo; adds Sanjoli.</div>

<div>She has also established a free mobile school in rural Haryana, the state where she was born and raised. &ldquo;Borders are not able to restrict like-minded people who prefer to volunteer with the organisation. Over 300 people are members and volunteer whenever the need arises,&rdquo; says Sanjoli, talking about how she manages her studies and the organisation&rsquo;s work at the same time. She attended St Theresa Convent School in Karnal and studied humanities; both her parents are teachers who taught her to stand up for her beliefs.</div>
<div>Studying social work for two years helped her understand how systems and larger institutions oppress individuals. &ldquo;I have the knowledge of the macro level and micro level processes and hope to work with the United Nations one day on human security,&rdquo; adds Sanjoli, who pursued graduation in Bachelor of International Security Studies at Australian National University, (ANU). After her graduation, she wanted to pursue Master&rsquo;s in Public Policy in the Netherlands as that would have allowed her to realise her dream of working with the UN, but due to the pandemic she had to decline the offer.&nbsp;</div>

<div>&ldquo;UoW is a pocket-friendly and young university that acknowledges the students&rsquo; voice. Also, Wollongong is a coastal city with a proximity to Sydney, which is an advantage,&rdquo; says Sanjoli. These are the factors to be kept in mind while zeroing in on the city and university for studying abroad.&nbsp;In the past, she led campaigns on mental health, menstrual hygiene and promoting holistic education across various cities in India. Now, Sanjoli plays an important role as a student representative on various committees in her university, volunteers with local organisations and has been an active participant in addressing issues faced by international students by regularly collaborating with local media outlets in Australia.</div>

<div>Her advice for students wishing to study abroad is to remain flexible and open to experiences and find the right balance between studies and other opportunities that universities provide through volunteering, being part of clubs and councils, engaging with the local community and being part of the experience.&nbsp;</div>

STUDY IN AUSTRALIA: Those involved in volunteering are more employable

India and Australia have different strengths when it comes to combatting climate change, but it requires our collective effort. Just as our countries&rsquo; leaders celebrated our ties almost a year ago when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Australia, in areas like academia, knowledge, research, trade and even ingenuity, through our academic institutions, India and Australia are committed partners eager to learn from each other and develop solutions for climate change.
Late last year, just as world leaders met at COP28, the pace of change and India&rsquo;s deep resolve to transform its climate fortunes were something of a revelation.
Environmental causes
India is rapidly transforming the operations of its small-to-medium enterprises, with innovative demand reduction measures greatly supported by government policy, including schemes that stimulate business investment in environmental and social causes. Though still some years away from implementing a wholly green energy market, India has its eyes on mitigation technologies, such as carbon capture&ndash;technology that removes greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide at the emissions source.
But there is no silver bullet, and a whole raft of solutions is needed. As the world&rsquo;s most populous country and world-leading economy, it is perhaps obvious to say that the actions of India can make a huge difference. But investing in a range of actions is crucial, which is why Indian and Australian researchers, like the University of Sydney and IIT Madras, are already working together and learning from each other on key technology and processes such as carbon capture, hydrogen generation, transport and storage, and critical minerals, amongst others.
There are also many other actions that can help our countries make a real difference. One key area is demand reduction &ndash; reducing the amount of energy used by services and technology. This can range from designing more energy efficient buildings, services and appliances, to using artificial intelligence to decrease energy consumption. For example, energy hubs promote efficiency and sustainability by combining and managing various energy sources, including electricity, gas, and heat, and can help optimise energy production, storage and distribution.
Transport and reducing our dependence on fuels is also crucial. Transport is the second biggest emitter per sector and, according to the International Energy Agency, the fastest growing of any category globally. There is an urgent need to phase out combustion-powered cars and develop electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. Designing cities and amenities to encourage walking and cycling can also be hugely beneficial.
Energy-efficient solutions
Creating zero-emissions energy and industry is another vital part of the net-zero equation, of which Australia is well advanced and India can make great future impact with the right investment in renewables and by addressing hard-to-abate sectors such as concrete and fertiliser production.
Critical mineral extraction from e-waste is another area where collaboration between industries and areas of academia can reap huge benefits &ndash;&ndash; creating new economies by giving a second life to goods that would otherwise end in landfill or as pollution.
Both India and Australia in recent years are experiencing extreme climatic events like severe flooding and drought. Understanding transition risks to business, law, and society is also crucial for building resilience against climate-related challenges.
These are the areas in which we are already collaborating and what we know will make a difference &ndash; and what we don&rsquo;t yet know and have yet to discover and research is an endless possibility.
When it comes to our biggest challenge, we must work together. No one country can claim the answer to climate change, and it cannot be solved by one researcher, institution, or company alone. It requires all of us. There is too much at stake for our efforts to be siloed. And in commitment to that spirit, in India, we have a partner in net zero.

India can forge a path to net zero through collective effort

While Indian students are largely fixated on studying Engineering, Computer Science or MBA in foreign universities, very few aspirants think of pursuing a master's, PhD, or postdoc in Agriculture, environment science and climate management in foreign universities. Lincoln University, Canterbury, in New Zealand, is the only land-based university in the southern hemisphere that offers a variety of courses related to farming, agriculture business and management, food science, food marketing, tourism management and more. The university also offers courses in Viticulture (cultivation of grapes and wine growing) and Oenology (study of wines) offering deep knowledge and research opportunities.

Knowledge of farming and innovative agricultural practices is one of the critical issues that the world needs to address. Prof Grant Edwards, vice-chancellor, Lincoln University emphasises the need for better strategies to handle the increasing threat to food security across the globe, mainly because of wars and changing climate. &ldquo;There has been a 30% loss in the agricultural food system which has increased the need for dedicated studies and research in this stream. The looming threat due to ecosystem changes, deforestation and disruption of biodiversity has elevated the demand for innovation by agriculture and environmental scientists,"&nbsp;says Edwards.

 Hailing from a farming background in Northland, a recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship and a DPhil from Oxford University, Prof Edwards has been a strong advocate of research and innovation in dairy farming systems and agricultural practices to nourish the growing global population. &ldquo;Many countries are growing wrong crops while geopolitical influences are massively impacting the produce across the world,&rdquo; he says.

New Zealand being an agriculture-based export country, places strong emphasis on research collaborations to increase productivity in farming, dairy and meat produce, and wine. &ldquo;Being an export-based country with a high level of automation in various sectors, the focus of academia is to work on food security, climate control, resource management and control of carbon dioxide emission. We have been focused on finding a greater understanding of relationships between land, food, and ecosystem.&rdquo;
New ways needed to be found to respond to issues with biosecurity, climate change and animal welfare. Growing populations, complex global trade and the move towards sustainability posed new challenges. &ldquo;To keep pace with the increasing challenges and balancing problems such as an ageing workforce and static birth rates, more graduates would be needed in engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence and other technological areas,&rdquo; adds Prof Edwards, who supports regulation of AI, robots and drones in agricultural industries.

Fostering relations with countries such as China and India are on the top of the list of Lincoln University to enhance student viability and partnership approach. &ldquo;We have 239 students from India, and we intend to increase the inflow of bright Indian students. Since India is an agriculture-based country, collaboration with academic institutes, exchange of postdocs and researchers and development of innovative courses at UG levels will help the students widen their horizons. The researchers will help in boosting the agricultural framework,&rdquo; says Edwards.

 The University introduced a new strategy for internationalisation in 2019 to increase diversity in the classrooms. Of the 3,000 students enrolled in various courses, 10% are international students, who are exploring the&nbsp;multiple&nbsp;courses and getting employed in the&nbsp;agro-based&nbsp;job market. &ldquo;To find a research mechanism for the innovative agricultural food system, we need shared resources and skilled research staff. This will support the effective use of water, bioscience waste management, inbreeding and animal husbandry. The collaboration will also help deal with the under-investment across the globe in research. It is a matter of concern&nbsp;that less than 2% of the GDP is spent on research in agriculture in most countries,&rdquo; says Edwards.

 Amity University and Lovely Professional University in India have collaborated with Lincoln University for academic exchange and research programmes on varied issues including human health risk, disaster management, digital water management, sustainability, and agricultural management etc. &ldquo;Canterbury and Christchurch are the centres for agriculture-based industries dealing in meat, dairy, plant-based products, wine, and seafood, which increases the internship and job opportunities for graduates and PG students. We have the highest placement rate in all of New Zealand as 84% of our students get employed soon after completing the courses,&rdquo; adds Edwards.

<div>When Aniruddha Chatterjee, assistant professor at the University of Otago, Dunedin, was named as one of the 10 recipients to be awarded a 2017 Rutherford Discovery Fellowship, the first thought was to help cancer patients across the globe including his home country India.</div>

<div>Aniruddha has been working on the Methylation of DNA, which can control the behaviour of DNA code in a cell, crucial for cancer treatment. For someone dreaming of research to support the medical fraternity, the breakthrough in research is&nbsp;no&nbsp;mean feat.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>As a 25-year-old intern at an IT (Information Technology) company in Coimbatore, Aniruddha realised his heart lies in research. Not satisfied with the routine IT job, Aniruddha started to explore opportunities in research, with multiple offers pouring in from Europe. The volume of research conducted at the University of Otago and the attractive scholarship prompted him to work in serene Dunedin for his PhD in 2009. &ldquo;Prof Ian Morrison was the main reason to finalise my decision. He was reassuring and showed complete faith in me. I was allowed to do clinically relevant human projects,&rdquo; Aniruddha tells&nbsp;Education Times.</div>

<div>The combination of Informatics computers which was new back then was exciting, he says. Furthermore, a scholarship to work with Prof Mike Nicholas and at the New Zealand Cancer Institute were irresistible offers that followed.</div>
<div> For a boy born in a family with modest means in Berhampore, West Bengal, who studied in Bengali-medium government schools, the journey was glorious. Aniruddha&rsquo;s father, a government school headmaster, ensured a strong academic environment in the house, resulting in brilliant academic achievements of his children.</div>
<div> Aniruddh worked on a few projects after completing his BTech (Biotechnology) from Osmania University, and master's from VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology), Vellore. After facing the initial struggles involving adjustment to the local culture, battling homesickness, and embracing the research process, Aniruddha went on to achieve Rutherford Discovery Fellowships administered by Royal Society Te Aparangi in 2017, which offered funding of $800,000 to be used for research for five years.</div>

<div>The fellowship fund helped him set up the Chatterjee labs at the University, which is now a platform focusing on epigenetic alterations in cancer metastasis. The lab consists of 15 researchers from India, Iran, and Nigeria, working on tackling bowel cancer which is a dreaded disease not only in New Zealand but also all over the world. Aniruddha along with Dr Euan Rodger and Dr Rachel Purcell had their findings published in&nbsp;iScience, which explains the research that identified a feature that allows bowel cancer to spread to the liver.</div>

<div>&ldquo;It is a very promising area to work on as it tackles cancer in many ways. I am happy that the research is of great significance in India and other parts of the world,&rdquo; says Aniruddha. Population-specific epigenetic data is very limited and the more we generate, the more we can understand disease (cancer in this case). The research is of significance as it will help the patients in early detection, monitoring and timely treatment, adds Aniruddha.</div>

<div>Chatterjee lab is studying DNA methylation levels in cancer cells and patient tumour samples and it has the potential to understand the aggressive nature of cancer and utilise the knowledge for patient benefit. The researchers are working to assign function to every single methylation change that could occur in a cancer cell so that ultimately epigenetic changes could be used to predict and prevent disease. &ldquo;Our work will contribute to detecting cancer early, predicting treatment response and providing new ways of treating cancer to improve patient outcome,&rdquo; says Aniruddha, who aims to expand his work by collaborating with Indian researchers.</div>

Following in the footsteps of the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago, another university from New Zealand is on the cusp of finalising an agreement with Mumbai's Bombay Stock Exchange Institute, a subsidiary of the Bombay Stock Exchange. This collaboration will pave the way for Indian students to enrich their learning experiences in Aotearoa.&nbsp;
Earlier, the alliances initiated by the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago have created a model that allows students to embark on their academic journey in India and complete their course in New Zealand, thereby qualifying for a post-study work visa.&nbsp;
"Fostering such international collaborations is critical for the growth and diversification of global education. It's a win-win situation for students and universities alike," said Raghwa Gopal, CEO of M Square Media (MSM), an educational management company.&nbsp;
These collaborative programmes were initially impacted by the outbreak of Covid-19, leading to a perceptible dip in the number of international students. However, the educational institutions looked for creative ways to tackle the situation. Australia and India have been partners in education since our countries signed an agreement on cooperation in culture and science over 50 years ago (1971), since then education has been a key pillar of our deepening relationship.
Today, there are more than 450 formal partnerships in place between Australian and Indian universities and over 70,000 Indian students studying in Australia, which makes India the second largest source of international students.
Indian migrants are Australia&rsquo;s fastest-growing diaspora group, active across all aspects of Australian life, including in academia and the research that drives innovation. Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Albanese recently referred to Australia&rsquo;s Indian diaspora as a living bridge between Australia and India.
Furthermore, our Education ministers, Jason Clare and Dharmendra Pradhan acknowledged the empowering and transformative nature of education &ndash; to build capacity, drive innovation and change lives.
In 2020, the Indian government launched the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), which seeks to transform India&rsquo;s education landscape and highlights that education is the key to unlocking the potential of its people and enabling them to grasp the opportunities of the future. Importantly for Australia, the NEP outlines an ambitious plan to internationalise India&rsquo;s education sector and the Australian government, and our education institutions are deeply committed to supporting India in this regard.
Framework of new rules
One key bilateral initiative that supports India&rsquo;s internationalisation agenda is the recently signed Mechanism for the Mutual Recognition of Qualifications between Australia and India, which has elevated our strategic bilateral relationship in education. This lays a foundation for Australian and Indian education providers to collaborate, develop and offer innovative and accessible education to Australian and Indian students. This agreement means that Indian graduates of Australia&rsquo;s education system can have confidence that if they seek to undertake further studies in India, then their Australian qualifications will be recognised. The agreement also provides comprehensive recognition of Indian senior secondary and postsecondary qualifications, providing graduates of India&rsquo;s education system with the flexibility to access the Australian higher education system through a range of pathways.
Opportunities for increasing and deepening international collaboration with Indian higher education institutions are rapidly increasing and the past year has seen Australian and Indian institutions develop a range of innovative and transformative dual, joint, and twinning programmes. Australian institutions have also proudly led the way in taking up India&rsquo;s generous invitation to establish campuses in India, with Deakin University and the University of Wollongong both working hard to establish campuses in GIFT City this year.
Increasing visa opportunities
The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) has further strengthened the bilateral relationship and our people-to-people links. The extension of post-study work rights for recent graduates, chiefly for those graduating in STEM fields, has further highlighted the opportunities.
Indian students are drawn to Australia as their preferred study destination due to its reputation for quality and excellent graduate employment outcomes. Seven Australian Universities are in the top 100 globally ranked institutions (as per the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023) and studying in Australia means high living standards and a great student experience, with six student cities ranked in the top 50 student cities globally by QS. Recent statistics indicate that Australian university graduates are securing full-time employment at the highest rate since 2009, reflecting the exceptional education offered by Australian universities.
In recent years, Australia&rsquo;s status as an international study destination has only strengthened. The Australian government has undertaken efforts to simplify the journey for students from the South Asian region, including India, to study in Australia. These efforts include policy developments and resource enhancements to facilitate a smooth transition for students. Most notably, the official resource for international students provided by the Australian Government, the &lsquo;Study Australia&rsquo; website, features a dedicated India student landing page offering a comprehensive course and scholarship search functionality, making it easier for Indian students to explore their options. The Study Australia website will be a valuable resource for Indian students seeking the latest updates and guidance on the Australian government's announcements regarding visas and other relevant information as the next intake for Australian Universities approaches.

Australia and India forge strong education partnership

The country is now focusing on strengthening its ties with India by increasing collaboration with Indian educational institutes, increasing student mobility, tourism and deepening business ties. Foreign Minister <keyword id="491850" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="s-jaishankar" source="Orion">S Jaishankar</keyword>’s visit to New Zealand in October 2022 and meetings with then PM <keyword id="4840661" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jacinda-ardern" source="Orion">Jacinda Ardern</keyword> have further cemented the ties between the two countries. To boost internationalisation and increase the number of Indian students and researchers enrolling in the universities, Education New Zealand has initiated India-New Zealand Education Week to encourage a dialogue on research while fostering innovation culture exchange and cooperation in the context of international education. Demonstrating the overall commitment to India, New Zealand has announced an investment of NZ$ 400,000 towards internationalisation and student mobility initiatives, announced David Pine, New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India at the recently held roundtable education session held at the Embassy of New Zealand. “We are speeding up the visa process for the students. There have been 85% of visa approvals for students since the opening of our borders. To save the students from hassles, the processing of student visas has been reduced to 30 days,” Pine told Education Times. While the country is encouraging more enrolments at the universities, there is no set target in terms of the number of students, said Pine. “The aim is to have a deeper collaboration between the institutes and encourage student exchange from both countries. Demonstrating the commitment to India, New Zealand has announced fund investment towards internationalisation and student mobility initiatives,” added Pine. Announcing the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) 2023-24, Pine highlighted the benefits of the Awards designed exclusively for Indian students. The awards are jointly funded by Education New Zealand and all eight New Zealand universities. The relationship between India and Australia is at its pinnacle with the signing of the interim Free Trade Agreement between the Prime Ministers of both the countries earlier this month. As an extension of the agreement, India and Australia also signed a letter of intent to work towards a migration and <keyword id="386989" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobility" source="Orion">mobility</keyword> partnership agreement to benefit their students and professionals. There is also a special <keyword id="52882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="task-force" source="Orion">task force</keyword> looking into the mutual recognition of educational qualifications, which is an important step forward given the large number of <keyword id="43976" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-students" source="Orion">Indian students</keyword> studying in Australia. The recent announcement of the ‘Maitri’ Scholars Program with allocation over $11 million to support Indian students to study in Australia's world-leading universities indicates a paradigm shift to a closer, deeper, and stronger relationship between the two countries. Australia's educational institutions are highly ranked among the global universities with a strong emphasis on quality education, student satisfaction and employability. The primary objective of the institutions continues to be focused on making newer career paths with excellent skills that will ensure that their students are globally employable. For example, Student Employability Initiatives by Study Queensland is one of the largest talent programmes in Australia, that focuses on developing students’ employability skills and connecting them with alumni and employers. Beyond the usual destinations Another important aspect is that students have a wider opportunity beyond the renowned destinations like Sydney and Melbourne to other developing parts of the country. Besides, they are majorly focusing on innovation and research. For instance, Queensland Government has invested $650 million in the future of Queensland, supporting growth, innovation, and research development across several key industries. To build on the state’s competitive strengths, diversify the economy and create knowledge-based jobs of the future, Queensland is driving innovation-led economic growth through increased collaboration between government, industry and research organisations, locally and internationally. Furthermore, maximum institutes are nation’s leading research-intensive large universities with the excellent environment of research opportunities, strong industry connections and favourable startup ecosystem. To mention a few examples, the University of Queensland developed the Nanopatch needle-free vaccine technology that will eliminate the need for refrigeration during storage and transportation. The world-leading malaria vaccine—PlasProtecTTM—is now at the human-trial stage and will be manufactured at the Institute for Glycomics at Griffith’s Gold Coast campus. It is important to mention that Australia is also focusing on developing emerging industries that would be of prime importance to the world. For example, the Queensland government is investing heavily to develop sectors like Advanced manufacturing, Biomedicine, Advanced agriculture, Green Hydrogen in bio-futures, Critical minerals, clean energy, Electric vehicles, smart mining, and next-gen Aerospace. Earlier this month, Australia announced a $5.8million, 3-year Critical Minerals Partnership with India to encourage strong supply chain partnerships on both sides. Student hubs To make students feel at home and familiar with the surroundings, Australia has strong student hubs across the country which provide information, help and advice at every stage of the student journey. In terms of security, states like Queensland have a dedicated portal for student assistance and 24-hour hotline support called 1800QSTUDY (1800 778 839). Their services include connection to local events and social activities, orientation to Australia and accommodation advice, career pathways advice, cultural and religious support, individual assistance relating to mental health and wellbeing, safety and security support, referrals to financial and legal support, work experience and employment advice, volunteering opportunities and English language support. Australia is exploring educational and commercial partnerships

The India-Australia relationship is at an all-time high. The pace and scale of our cooperation has been grown swiftly since our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was agreed in 2020. The recent Summit between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Prime Minister of India, <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>, on March 21 called for a new level of ambition to drive our cooperation forward, particularly when it comes to our economic cooperation. And education is a sector which holds great potential. At the Summit, Prime Ministers announced a <keyword id="300268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taskforce" source="Orion">Taskforce</keyword> on <keyword id="5919483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Education-Qualifications" source="Orion">Education Qualifications</keyword> Recognition. This taskforce will address the recognition of different delivery modes including online and blended learning, joint degrees, and education at offshore campuses. The taskforce will deliver a mechanism for expanding education qualification recognition between Australia and India by the end of the year, with implementation to take place in 2023. Education ties Since the early 2000s, Australia has become a destination of choice for Indian students pursuing higher education internationally. In 2019, 115,000 Indian students were studying in Australia and Indians are one of the largest proportion of migrants who call Australia home. Many Indians are working in vital positions in Australian industry, academia, and government. And thousands of Indians who studied in Australia have gone on to develop successful global careers. Australian education is in the top tier of demand globally, due to its high quality, strict accreditation standards, sophisticated support for international students, relevant curriculum and one of the highest graduate employability rates, all delivering a better return on investment for the student. Australia has one of the most supportive international education systems in the world. The Australian Strategy for International Education 2021-2030 puts the student experience, student protection and students’ rights at the centre. Australia also offers attractive post-study work rights to international students. Recently, Australian Trade and Investment Commission has launched SAIEP (Study Australia Industry Immersion Program) for current Indian students at Australian universities to enhance their employability skills. Under the transnational education system, Australian and Indian universities are developing models for Indian students to start their study in India and then after a few years move to an Australian campus with an option to graduate with a degree from either institution. Research collaborations Australia has reputed research and innovation institutes. Australia has world-class capabilities in conducting research in Energy, Food, Agriculture, Digital Health. During the pandemic, Australian pharma and biomedical sector supported by its universities’ strong interdisciplinary focus has helped in solving complex problems. The education and research relationship between Australia and India is based on shared values and aligned capabilities. While both countries are knowledge-based economies, further commonalities in how education and research is conducted, similar challenges and a focus on solving issues with societal relevance has kept the engagement tighter to future needs. There are numerous partnerships between Indian and Australian institutions which are adding real value to industry output. Having recognised this as an obstacle, we are offering deferred fees payment for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) master’s students,” he said. Benefit to master’s students These master’s students will be able to begin their studies online from India while delaying their tuition payments until they activate their education loan when they travel to New Zealand. They will also be offered a 30% bursary starting in 2022. “We believe this innovative approach is a win-win as students can press on and begin their master’s with the University of Auckland,” Berquist said. Supporting UG students An undergraduate student support package has also been developed after research with students and their families in India. It includes virtual micro-internships with New Zealand companies, a loyalty programme providing a one-course fee waiver after the completion of two semesters of full-time study. This programme includes additional online support. “Our support package will allow students to begin building their employability skills, while starting their studies in India. And once they arrive in New Zealand, they will benefit from our work rights provisions which they can use while studying and for three years once their studies are complete,” Freshwater said. New Zealand has approved eight vaccines including Indian-made vaccines Covishield and Covaxin. The University of Auckland recently sponsored the QS India Summit and launched New Zealand’s first joint PhD programme with the IITs. United Kingdom The United Kingdom was one of the worst Covid-19 hit countries in the world. After standing its ground and launching the biggest inoculation programme, the country has managed to vaccinate over 70% of its population till now. If international students (including Indians) wish to pursue education in the UK, they must have valid student visas and would need to pay an immigration and health surcharge to acquire free NHS medical care, including the vaccination for Covid-19, which Prime Minister <keyword id="6380867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="boris-johnson">Boris Johnson</keyword> announced for all adult population by July 2021 end. The government has also passed a few regulations that allow a person to get tested and treated for Covid-19 without paying a penny (regardless of his visa status). Australia The Australian government has still not painted a clear picture of opening its borders for international students. However, it has announced free vaccinations to all visa holders, including international students living in Australia. The government hopes to welcome international students (including Indians) on its soil in the near future. If and when it happens, vaccination status will be one of the crucial factors for the entry of international students to ensure the protection of the entire community. That said, the vaccination programme is going strong in the country and all adults are expected to get vaccinated by the autumn of 2021.
