#WomenInSpotlight: Deepika Chowdhury's journey from biologist to India's First Female Professional Bodybuilder
Deepika Chowdhury's story is one of resilience and transformation. Until 2012, her life as a molecular biologist revolved around the lab and home. But a childhood love for athletics led her to join a gym, sparking a journey to see her become the first Indian woman professional figure athlete, competing on international stages.

In an Instagram story, Deepika shared her motivation for fitness, revealing, 'I witnessed my mother go through volatile domestic violence. I never wanted to be so 'weak' and lifting helped me believe that I am not weak... Fitness made me feel that I am not ignored or neglected.'

From Scientist to Athlete

Hailing from Pune, Maharashtra, Deepika excelled in both sports and academics, earning a Master's degree in microbiology from Savitri Bai Phule Pune University. As a technical officer at the National Institute of Virology, her routine was far removed from the world of bodybuilding.

Her fitness journey began in 2012 with basic training under a coach. Deepika's growing passion for sculpting her body led her to pursue a sports nutrition course at K11 Academy, where she discovered professional bodybuilding and figure competitions. Her visit to the SHERU Classic, India's only professional bodybuilding contest, was transformative. Meeting idols like Shannon Dey inspired her to become a figure athlete.

Achieving Milestones

Deepika's debut at the 2013 Fort Lauderdale Cup in Florida saw her winning the 'figure' category, setting the stage for her illustrious career. In 2016, she became the first Indian woman to earn a Pro status from the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation. By 2017, she had competed in prestigious events like the Arnold Classic and had trained with Bombshell Fitness in Florida.

Deepika's journey is not just about personal achievements but also about inspiring others. Despite financial challenges and a lack of sponsors, her determination and resilience drove her to excel. Her social media presence, where she shares her fitness journey, serves as a beacon of inspiration for women, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and prioritize their health.

Deepika's transition from a scientist to a professional bodybuilder is a testament to her passion and dedication. Her journey inspires women to chase their dreams and reinforces the importance of fitness and self-belief.
