A sound bath, though recently popularised, is an ancient practice of ‘bathing’ the body with sound waves produced by various traditional wind and percussion instruments like gongs, singing bowls, chimes, tuning forks, and also the human voice itself. Just like a typical bath where you immerse yourself in water, a sound bath immerses you in sound, enveloping your body in its harmonic vibrations.

Though there is no evidence of it treating or healing any medical condition, studies suggest that sound waves help to alleviate stress, depression, and fatigue. It is important to note that a sound bath is not a replacement for medical treatments but rather a low-risk complement to medical methods prescribed by a doctor.

It is a full-body meditative experience and the process varies from culture to culture. It can be as simple as chanting an om or as intricate as an hour-long experience in a dedicated environment accompanied by a sound practitioner. This ancient practice has been popping up all over social media and many have tried and confirmed positive results. Curious yet? Read on.

What is a sound bath?

During a sound bath, the participants lie flat on their backs in a relaxed position. This position is known as the Savasana position in yoga. The sound practitioner will then use one or more instruments and create calming, immersive sounds. The sound waves can be gentle or intensive, depending on the instrument used. Don’t expect a catchy melody, but rather a carefully selected amalgamation of therapeutic sound waves that will lead you to a state of complete relaxation and contemplation. Unlike a yoga or meditation session, you are not guided at a sound bath. The participants are encouraged to be mindful, let the benefits of the sound waves set in, and just listen.

What are the benefits of a sound bath?

As mentioned before, more research on the subject is yet to be done and most of the evidence on the benefits of sound baths is anecdotal. Sound bath advocates claim that its sonorous frequencies foster physical and mental healing. Connecting with your subconscious mind and overall relaxation is guaranteed. Other such benefits include :

1. Relaxation of both body and mind

2. Dissipation of stress and anxiety

3. Enhancing concentration and mental clarity

4. Reduction of physical tension and fatigue

5. Elevation of mood and diminishing feelings of anger

6. Enhancing sleep quality

7. Fostering a sense of spiritual well-being

Can we practice it at home?

Sound baths are usually done as a group in a dedicated area, or it can be a one-on-one session with a sound practitioner who offers solo sound baths for people who are more comfortable in a private setting.

However, it is also possible to purchase sound healing instruments or use your own voice to create an adapted version of a sound bath at home. Listening to a sound bath recording is also a practical option.

To begin with, create a calm, peaceful, and low-lit environment and ensure that there are no distractions. Place yourself in a comfortable position on the floor with whichever instrument you choose to use in front of you. Sit in a neutral position with all your muscles relaxed, and start by taking a few deep breaths. Once you are prepared to begin, set your intention and decide what you want from your sound bath. Start playing the instrument and continue to focus on its soothing sound and your breathing over the duration of the bath.

New and improved meditative practices always rise and fall, but sound baths have been around for centuries. Each individual will experience a sound bath differently and it does not require a lot of discipline or practice to learn - just listen!

Keep in mind that sound baths are not advisable for people who are sensitive to sound, wear hearing aids, or have migraines. It is always best to consult your doctor before taking part in a sound bath, especially for those with a physical or mental health condition.
