In a moment which most corporate workers would term dreadful, a 23-year-old freelancer named Grace found herself seated on the same plane as her manager after she filed for a sick leave at work to catch a flight.

Grace's awkward moment was captured in a TikTok video titled, "Me taking a sick day from work just to end up in the same airplane as my manager."

Unexpected meeting on the flight

The clip shows her on the flight with her face covered in hoodies displaying wry expressions. Further, the video also highlights the humorous nature of this unexpected meet-up through a screenshot of messages between her and her manager, who clicked a picture of himself with Grace present a few seats behind him.

After being posted in June, the video quickly spread across the internet, bringing in over 30,000 views and numerous likes. Viewers rushed to the comments section to offer their sympathy and share their own embarrassing workplace anecdotes.

One user commented, "I'd cry like a baby and give my resignation letter," while another joked, "Had to catch a flight to get the medicine she needed."

Another recounted a similar experience: "I thought it was bad when my manager phoned because I texted her I was sick. I had to answer the phone while at the airport. There were announcements like boarding at gate number... in the background." Another user humorously wrote, "I would throw myself off of the plane ngl [not gonna lie]."

A few TikTokers even empathised with Grace's unexpected ordeal. "I wouldn't be mad as a manager because I'd do the same lol," one user stated.

All's well that ends well moment for Grace

As Grace's story spread out into the offline world, Newsweek reached out to Grace to document her take about the incident. The publication revealed that Grace, who juggles her presence between Bali, Indonesia, and Europe for her work, called out of work to travel back home to Bali by putting forth the reason that she had a doctor's appointment.

"Long story short, I was waiting in the [airport] line and then I saw a familiar face coming to me which called my name," she told Newsweek. Unfortunately for Grace, her boss also often stays in Bali. When he recognised her ahead of the flight, he sarcastically asked, "Oh, so this is hospital?"

Although such encounters seem to have negative outcomes in most cases, Grace and her manager saw the jest in this bizarre coincidence.

"I was so shocked but we ended up laughing together," she said. "We ended up talking all the way to the airplane and while we're inside, he took that picture and sent it to me," Grace added.
