In hardware you must constantly be learning. If you work as a consultant you are likely to have vendor specific education your employer will require you take. Some levels of certification allow your employer to earn more per service call if they send a tech with specific certifications. Once three years passes all of that new education turns into historical artifacts and as new model years pass, they are surpassed by others. I have always maintained an “Educational Addendum” (EA) that I can share with employers to show all of the training I have performed over time. The EA is a three ring binder where I insert certs into sheet protectors and a list of classes. After that the home lab is your friend. Leverage virtualization.

I once wrote an asset management application that was of the best sales tools ever. It was similar to a popular PC audit tool that collected data as part of the login script. Another app was used and can be written easily to compile reports to share with your customer. A 30 minute free setup is well worth the time time to collect data so you can show your client where they need to put their dollars. while some equipment will be up to date reporting allows you to spot the devices with older, slower storage and help customers understand where to invest next. That always leads to sales. Great investment in your own practice.
