You're facing employee resistance to volunteer initiatives. How can you inspire their participation?

This is so much aligned to a company’s culture. Some companies embrace giving, not just thru CSR but taking pride in creating opportunities for their biggest asset, their employees to be part of the volunteering culture. Sometimes when facing a resistance, a little nudge is fine (some might debate this) but coming back from a well-organized volunteering day gradually lays the foundation where a positive word of mouth makes all the difference. What has worked wonders is leading by example by the management, who genuinely show their care as much for the communities as much as business. Keep the visit simple, genuine, and well planned so everyone feels involved. This usually makes a difference both ways. Celebrate the CHANGEMAKERS!!

From my experience, inspiring employee participation in volunteer initiatives starts with understanding their reservations and addressing them thoughtfully. First, I made it a point to clearly communicate the personal and professional benefits of volunteering. I highlighted how these initiatives could help them develop new skills, expand their network, and find personal fulfillment. Sharing stories of how volunteering had positively impacted colleagues' lives and careers helped illustrate these benefits tangibly.

This sometimes becomes a common issue in the CSR field. Some of the staff members will look down upon the practices that are done at CSR projects (even management). It might look inferior to clean a beach or help in making a change at a local community centre. This is the ideology of certain members where you sometimes have to understand. There might be other external factors that are also contributing into the issue where you need to understand. Not everyone will have a positive contribution to a good cause, so try promoting something good and also do not get disheartened if turnover is less at the beginning. It's a good cause, so try to push the maximum with those you have.

You can develop a certificate of volunteering or even hold a mini award ceremony to recognize dedicated volunteers by locations or even department. For example, we had 30 days of impact and after every week, we would recognize the location that had the highest volunteer engagement, making it like a mini-competition. This also helped with the general motivation

There are some of the members who will be antiCSR no matter what you do. These members could be at your board level, management or just staff members doing nothing but complaining. At the top level, they won't understand the value of committing to a scope and will find faults, at management they will be questioning the expenses, at staff it will be reluctance to participate. Just make sure you have solid answers and backing by evidence. This will make you progress and if it's not worthwhile, just do for the greater good. Make sure you keep the good work going.

In my experience, one of the best ways is to get the top leadership involved. Imagine your CEO and top executives going out regularly for volunteering! This would be amazing right? It will help people who have difficult bosses be more involved
