Before July 31st, we have the opportunity to drive Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's #MassLeadsAct, a transformative economic development package including a $1 billion climatetech investment over 10 years, across the finish line. Businesses and environmental advocates alike are energized by this once-in-a-generation opportunity to claim the climatetech industry for Massachusetts' economy and people. ELM's Elizabeth Turnbull Henry and Associated Industries of Massachusetts' Brooke M. Thomson published a joint op-ed in the Boston Business Journal about how this legislation will not only drive our state's innovation and competitiveness, but also expedite our clean energy transition and grow our green economy. Our state is poised to become the global hub for climatetech, but it is now up to our Legislature to make that a reality. Let's seize this opportunity - both for climate and for business. I am excited to share my progress with New England for Offshore Wind! I joined the coalition just over a month ago as their Offshore Wind Fellow. In this role I've been learning all about Offshore wind and its potential to bring about a more climate justice future for New England, how communities can benefit from its development, and deepening my understanding of advocacy work. The Coalition was founded in 2020 by Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM), and more than 100 organizations are members. It is a coalition of environmental NGOs, labor unions, business associations, and grassroots groups. Its purpose is to analyze and support the responsible development of this new industry. Special thanks to Browning the Green Space and MassCEC Internships for supporting me in this role! through them, I am getting additional professional development to be better prepared for the climate and environmental workforce.

Yesterday, the Massachusetts Senate voted to pass S.2856, An Act relative to strengthening Massachusetts’ economic leadership, otherwise known as the #MassLeadsAct. This bill includes robust funding for a 10-year initiative to make Massachusetts a global hub for climatetech, thereby growing our state’s economy, building our clean energy workforce, driving competitive growth, and shaping a thriving clean energy future. ELM thanks the Senate for their support of climate innovation, with particular thanks to Senate President Karen Spilka, Chair Michael Rodrigues, Senator Barry Finegold, and Senator Edward J. Kennedy. With both the House and Senate supporting significant climatetech provisions, ELM is optimistic as the legislation enters conference committee. We look forward to continuing our work with the Massachusetts Legislature to see a robust bill through the finish line. #MAPoli https://lnkd.in/eHchfadd - - - #ClimateTech #ClimateTechnology #MassLeads #GreenWorkforce #GreenJobs #ClimateJobs #CleanEnergy #CleanEnergyWorkforce #MAClimate

On June 26, MACP and its partners [Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM), Greentown Labs, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, Mass Mobility Hub, NECEC, The Engine Accelerator] had the pleasure of hosting a Competitiveness Conversation on "Massachusetts Climatetech Leading the Charge" featuring a panel of 4 climatetech CEOs sharing their experiences and insights on the industry in the commonwealth. We were honored to be joined by Joshua Aviv, CEO of SparkCharge. A few key points of his included: 👥 Massachusetts has a talented pool of experienced professionals knowledgeable about building cleantech companies, which was a major reason that SparkCharge made the decision to stay in the state and hire locally. 🚗 The Massachusetts climatetech ecosystem is growing: organizations like Greentown Labs and MassRobotics have laid a strong foundation, and we have new organizations like Mass Mobility Hub, which is focused on transportation and mobility, that will help attract more startups to the state. 📈 The Massachusetts climatetech ecosystem is not only growing, but with the right investment (including increased access to capital) can thrive. See the short video clip below to hear why Josh describes Massachusetts as the "superpower" that supported SparkCharge's success.

Announcing Bethany Patten is the inaugural executive director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Climate Policy Center–MIT’s “front door” to provide evidence-based climate research for local, state, national, and international policymakers. Previous to this, she served as the Director of Policy and Engagement for the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative where she co-founded MIT Climate Pathways Project bringing together faculty, staff, and researchers to advance the adoption of evidence-based climate policy through top tier decision-makers. The project, which leverages the En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator co-developed by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan, has engaged over 11000 global leaders in government, business, and civil society. In addition to leading MIT’s Climate Policy Center, she is a Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management. Her work centers on the translation of academic research into real-world impact in the public and private sector. Specifically, she examines how institutions can best practice ethical political engagement, connecting with and educating leaders ranging from MIT graduate students to members of the United States Congress. As an MIT Sloan faculty member, she teaches the action-learning based course Sustainable Business Lab (‘S-Lab’) and several MIT Sloan Executive Education courses. Elsewhere at MIT, she is a member of the MIT Climate Policy Working Group and sits on MIT Sloan School of Management’s Faculty DEI Committee. “Individual consumers can only make choices as good as the frameworks available to them, which makes it even more important to raise our voices and make sure that good policy is in place.” With her own plastic diet Dr. Pepper bottle in hand, ELM’s Amy Boyd Rabin writes for WBUR’s Cognoscenti on how we can reframe climate anxiety from assuming personal blame to collectively pushing for strong climate policy that provides systemic solutions to an ultimately systemic problem. Massachusetts has passed game-changing climate legislation since 2016, becoming a global leader on the issue. Now, we must sustain that momentum and use all our energy to ensure the 2024 Omnibus Climate Bill and Mass Leads Act are passed this month. As Amy says, “The 2023-2024 legislative session ends on July 31, and we cannot let it end without passing robust climate legislation. Let your legislators know that their jobs aren’t done until they see the climate omnibus bill through the finish line. The next month is going to involve a lot of important sessions and late nights as the Environmental League of Massachusetts works to ensure these bills are the best they can be.” Read the full piece: https://lnkd.in/gdUJ5xvG - - - #ClimateAnxiety #ClimateSolutions #MAClimateBill #MAPoli #Climate #ClimatePolicy #ThoughtPiece

Today, Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities removed a backlog of pending applications for municipal aggregation plans across Massachusetts, meaning more cities and towns will have access to competitively priced renewable energy, with specific guidelines for engaging environmental justice communities. “The approval of the new guidelines demonstrates the collaborative effort undertaken to pave the way for innovation and accelerating the path towards greater emissions reductions in Massachusetts.” https://lnkd.in/ewvcAMBu
