CEO of Writer.com | Enterprise generative AI | Hiring in ML, eng, design, mktg, sales + CS

Last week a major tech company became the first significant employer to mention generative AI-fueled restructuring in their layoffs announcement. But they definitely will not be the last. We're laying off 1,800 people but will hire another 1,800 better suited to an AI-first future, the company essentially said. I think there's a SLEW of enterprise executives who'd love to accelerate the pace of internal AI innovation and employee productivity and wish they could do the same thing, and this is only the beginning of such restructuring announcements. But I'd like to propose an idea to these execs before they headline a layoff like this to be about doubling down on generative AI — ***Let everyone re-interview and re-structure their roles with AI before deciding to do a layoff.*** Make it a Manhattan Project, be deliberate about it, paint a vision of what your company becomes when everyone has successfully done it. Give people the tools and resources to make it happen (and actual DEDICATED TIME to learn and adapt their roles). And only THEN decide who and how you should restructure your workforce. It's not like the market is awash with knowledge workers highly skilled with how to use AI to get to 200% productivity. Yes, the skills that companies need in their employees is changing FAST. Yes, you need employees who can use AI to do their jobs. But what does that actually mean? Companies need creative systems thinkers, employees who can code up their own tools, employees who can do the work of 2-3 people in the pre-AI era. Employees who can conceive of new experiences for their customers that provide greater service at lower cost, fueled by AI. Employees who understand the weaknesses of the current generation of AI tools and can still work around them. Execs are going to start forcing the issue top-down if they don't start seeing the employees of the future show up. But they have a big role to play in building those employees. And it's going to be easier to do it from the inside. I'd hazard to guess that some of the people who got laid off last week would make for excellent AI-first employees for that second cohort that the company is going to go out and hire. People need to be given the chance, the time, and the tools.

This week, AI providers like AWS and Writer new tools for their separate platforms to make enterprise-grade generative AI applications easier to make and hopefully more accurate. On Wednesday, I attended Amazon’s AWS Summit NY, where Amazon Web Services (AWS) debuted several tools including contextual grounding checks along with a new Guardrails API to evaluate inputs and outputs for various AI models. Meanwhile, Writer is taking a graph-based RAG approach to analyze up to 10 million words for chat apps while also making its AI models more explainable. For yesterday’s Digiday story, I spoke with Diya Wynn about the AWS updates and with Deanna Dong about Writer's updates. https://lnkd.in/eJNFavTg #AWS #WriterAI #GenerativeAI #AI #Enterprise #LLMs

Chief Market Officer Anna Griffin of Commvault, a leading cybersecurity organization, joins us to discuss Ask Commvault Cloud, a custom chat app powered by Writer Knowledge Graph that allows go-to-market teams to self-serve enablement by giving them easy access to resources on competitor differentiation, persona-specific content, and product capabilities. Writer Knowledge Graph is powered by retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which is a natural language processing approach that combines information retrieval with text generation, enhancing the quality and accuracy of AI-generated content. “I’ve heard RAG is complex and requires months of dedicated engineering, and even then you don’t get the level of accuracy and quality you expect. But with Writer Knowledge Graph, I was pleasantly surprised. For Ask Commvault Cloud, folks on my non-technical team, along with the support of the Writer account team, got a powerful, highly customized chat app deployed in just weeks.” - Anna Griffin Learn more about how Commvault enables their GTM teams with a custom RAG solution in our latest spotlight: https://hubs.ly/Q02GdzNj0 #GenerativeAI #CyberSecurity #AIApp #ChatApp

Furthering our commitment to transparency, we also rolled out “explainable AI” – a first-of-its-kind feature that shows the thought process of how our generative AI technology arrives at responses in real-time.
