GMD Staff Spotlight: Today, we are shining the spotlight on Paul Beaker, Chief Engineer & Director of Advanced Product Development at GM Defense (GMD). With over two decades at GM, Beaker's leadership and expertise drive innovation in defense engineering. He oversees key teams, ensuring seamless integration of vehicle designs and prototypes, and works closely with Business Development to assess new opportunities. Beaker's role at GMD allows him to manage the entire engineering lifecycle, from concept to realization, collaborating with engineers both in the office and on the shop floor. His team utilizes advanced CAD tools and operates a prototype shop to bring designs to life. Since joining GM in 1997 and transitioning to GMD in 2021, his dedication has significantly advanced GMD's engineering capabilities. Outside of work, Beaker enjoys mountain biking, water sports, skiing, wakeboarding, ice hockey, and playing guitar in church. He also loves home improvement projects and is a proud owner of Bella, a 10-year-old black lab adopted from the Leader Dog for the Blind program. Paul Beaker's dedication and passion exemplify GMD's commitment to engineering excellence in defense technology. His contributions push the boundaries of innovation. GM Defense is excited to share that it's providing General Motors Ultium batteries to UT Arlington College of Engineering (UTA) Pulsed Power and Energy Laboratory (PPEL) and Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division. UTA PPEL will evaluate the technology to understand current capabilities of commercial automotive batteries under dynamic discharge and charge scenarios. The project, funded by the Operational Energy Innovation office of the U.S. Department of Defense, will help provide pathways and options for domestically supplied energy storage for future use in military platforms.
