We at the Hemp Feed Coalition are at a decisive moment in our mission to legalize hempseed meal (HSM) as an animal feed ingredient for egg-laying chickens. Despite our extensive efforts and collaboration with industry stakeholders, certain groups are spreading misinformation and actively working against the HFC to derail our progress, to the detriment of US producers and processors. It is time for us to come together as an industry to support the HFC and work together to overcome the onerous and arbitrary nature of FDA cannabinoid regulations that plague the entire U.S. hemp industry. As an industry, we can continue to waste our energy working against each other, prevent worthy progress, and stifle each other, which doesn’t seem like a good path forward from my perspective. Alternatively, we can combat misinformation, unite for change, and build a brighter future for sustainable agriculture together. Why This Matters: - Approving HSM for animal feed provides a valuable alternative for farmers and processors. - This move will significantly benefit the agricultural community, support sustainable farming practices, and reduce supply chain waste. - Increased hemp cultivation can reduce costs and alleviate pressure on other high-cost crops like corn, soy, and wheat. Key Highlights: - Our recent sampling achieved the FDA’s targets with an 80% pass rate using standard cleaning processes. - Approval of HSM for animal feed could require nearly 10 million acres of hemp cultivation, benefiting farmers and processors alike. - Expanding to other livestock, such as broiler chickens and beef cattle, offers even greater agricultural opportunities.
