Welcome to Neighborhood, Jen Rowswell, AGNP-C! Jen has joined Neighborhood's internal/family medicine department as a nurse practitioner. She is a graduate of University at Buffalo and Duke University. Jen brings with her experience working in a variety of environments, such as working with providers practicing in rural, suburban and urban landscapes. She enjoyed learning about patients, their unique backgrounds and goals; and how to best support them as their healthcare provider. Jen shares that during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic she worked in a 25-bed critical access hospital in rural Nebraska: "With fewer resources than larger cities, the hospital staff worked as a team; navigating through a challenging and unprecedented time in order to provide the best care possible," said Jen. "Being open, inclusive and adaptable as an organization allowed us to care for the members of our community holistically." #WelcometoNeighborhood

“She is an angel,” said Terri (pictured left), a Neighborhood Health Center patient. “She saved my life.” Terri is talking about Kayla Carpino (pictured right), an RN Manager at our Riverway location (1569 Niagara Street). One day, Terri called Neighborhood because she was having spells of passing out. She was connected with Kayla, who knew something was terribly wrong. Weeks later, they had the opportunity to reconnect. “Taking care of patients is really huge for me, anything I can do to help them or to get them the help they need, that’s why I do this,” said Kayla. Welcome to Neighborhood, Emma Thomas, RDH! Emma has joined Neighborhood's dental department as a registered dental hygienist. She's had the opportunity to live in England, New Zealand, and Australia and says she witnessed the importance of universal healthcare in those countries. "It was amazing to see each citizen being taken care when they were sick or injured without having to worry about how they would afford their treatment," said Emma. #WelcometoNeighborhood

Did you know? Cultural humility recognizes that our understanding of other cultures is limited and evolving. Cultural humility is a lifelong journey. At Neighborhood, we value inclusivity and diversity. Our workforce reflects the multicultural populations that we serve, and we incorporate our understanding and appreciation of differences into the care we provide everyday. Neighborhood Health Center's Director of Equity, Sandy Walker, has been leading virtual and in-person cultural humility sessions with Neighborhood's employees. In these sessions employees have the opportunity to learn the elements of a cultural humility mindset and to collaboratively apply that knowledge to healthcare scenarios and their own experiences. “These sessions are a critical part of empowering each of us to continue moving from 'good to great' in meeting the diverse needs of each patient, while disrupting that predictability," said Sandy. #WelcometoNeighborhood #healthequity
