About us
New Millennium, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Steel Dynamics, engineers and fabricates steel building systems and components for use in low-rise and multi-story construction – including commercial, industrial, healthcare, educational, and government markets. Engineered systems include steel joists, girders and trusses, steel decking, and long-span composite floor solutions. New Millennium has the capability to design and produce building systems to satisfy unique and diverse architectural and structural requirements. New Millennium is the nation’s second largest producer with 481,000 tons of steel joists and steel decking shipped in 2014. New Millennium offers leading BIM-based joist and deck design, and is backed by dynamic manufacturing and availability. With a broad product offering recognized for optimizing steel construction projects, New Millennium is uniquely positioned to continue to grow its business nationally. New Millennium serves the domestic construction market from six steel fabrication facilities spanning the continental U.S. Its first plant at Butler, Indiana, began production in 2000. A second plant in Lake City, Florida, started up in 2005. The former John W. Hancock operation in Salem, Virginia, was purchased as a part of Steel Dynamics’s acquisition of Roanoke Electric in 2006. In 2010, SDI purchased three plants and other assets: Hope Arkansas; Fallon, Nevada; and Juarez, Mexico. These expand our geographical reach westward.

New Millennium in Lake City, Florida purchased additional land in early 2023 and began planning for its development. Construction began in April 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once complete, they’ll also be remodeling the existing guard shack into a shipping office. Final blueprints include a larger retention pond, separate employee entrance, new guard shack, a storage area for trailers, and a shipping office. We can’t wait to see the finished project.

June 14, 2024, was a bittersweet day in the Butler, Indiana facility. After 51 years in the joist and deck industry, our mentor and inspiration Mark Likens retired on June 14, completing his long and accomplished career in the joist and deck industry. Mark’s adventures in the joist and deck industry began in the summer of 1973, in the engineering department of another company, but we don’t hold that against him. Throughout the decades he made his way to Socar, which New Millennium purchased in 2006, all the while learning the functions of management, sales, scheduling, material costs and shipping processes, and keeping up with his duties in the engineering department. Mark transferred to New Millennium, Butler, in 2008 and solidified his reputation as one of the greats. Mark and his wife Lori are proud parents to four adult children – April, Brooke, Audrey and Adam. They are also the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. Their retirement plans consist of attending many, many rock concerts, some traveling, keeping up with the grandkids’ activities, and staying active with family and friends. Mark says, “The working years went by so fast. I was blessed with a profession that I liked and enjoyed. Most importantly, I worked with absolutely wonderful people these past 50+ years. It’s been and honor and I thank you all.” The honor was ours. Thank you, Mark!
