About us
Founded in 1969, Next Door is an award-winning, birth-to-five early learning school based in Milwaukee’s Central City. We focus on the first five years of life because that is when a child’s brain development is most active and when we can have the greatest impact on a child’s future success. Our ultimate goal is to get our students ready for school and ready for life! We offer families full and half-day center-based programming as well as a home-based option. All of our programs provide access to health and dental care, as well as special education and mental health services. Knowing that parents are a child’s first teacher, Next Door offers a number of supportive services for moms and dads. They include: prenatal services, adult education and a fatherhood program. We also have a team of Family Advocates, who work closely with parents to make sure the family has what they need to succeed. Our reach goes even further into the community by leading a partnership program with ten early childhood organizations in Milwaukee County. Next Door staff offers teacher coaching and training on curriculum assessment at each of the partner locations. By working together, we can increase access to safe and high-quality infant and toddler care. Between our own sites and the partner agencies, Next Door currently serves more than 2,000 children and their families. Next Door offers a host of giving and volunteer opportunities throughout the year to support our children and families. NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK "En plein air" early childhood style. Our Art Education program introduces concepts like "en plein air" art - a French expression meaning "in the open air," and refers to the act of painting outdoors with your subject in full view. Concepts like these - along with introductions to international artists, different creative techniques, and diverse subject matters - are all a part of the quality learning experiences at Next Door.

NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK Curiosity. Reading to children is one way to foster curiosity about the world. Children – and their teacher – are excited to find out “what happens next” during a volunteer Read-In at La Causa, one of Next Door’s Child Care Partnership Sites. The Read-In was a part of our Read for Children program where volunteers, staff and family members read more than 94,735 minutes to children. #earlychildhoodeducation

NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK Books for kids. Our early childhood education programs focus on literacy and language development through every activity our children experience – socializing, eating together, sensory learning, math, science, reading, and so much more. Providing books to children in our programs and in the community is one of these efforts. Our Mobile Library visits our 10 Child Care Partnership sites and community events sharing books with children. We recently joined Fit Club MKE campers at an event to help them build their home libraries. You can help when you donate new or gently-used children’s books on Saturday, June 29th from 12-3 pm at the Mid Gate Promotions Booth at Summerfest – and receive a free admission ticket to enjoy the fest that day!
