Statement by Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum on SCOTUS Idaho v. United States (EMTALA) Opinion: “We are relieved that the Supreme Court did the right thing (in “legal speak” vacated its stay of the preliminary injunction) in Idaho v. United States. The bottom line is—at least for now—pregnant persons can legally receive abortion care in medical emergencies in Idaho and other states that ban abortions. This decision left undecided critical issues like whether Idaho acted within its rights or whether the federal law called EMTALA takes precedence over state abortion bans. “For now, the case has been sent back to the lower courts. And, for now, patients in states with bans will still face great difficulty in accessing reproductive healthcare. Here in Oregon, we will continue to experience demand for services from patients traveling across the border from Idaho. We welcome them here and will not let up in our fight for safe and legal abortion care for all!” #abortionrights #reproductiverights #EMTALA #SCOTUS

Dear colleagues,   As we approach Juneteenth, let’s take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day. Historically, June 19, 1865, marks the day when 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom.  Legally, this federal government notification came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Emotionally, Freedom Day stands as a reminder of the tension inherent in Black Americans’ delayed liberation and our nation’s struggle to achieve freedom and equality for all.     Juneteenth resonates more than ever because it highlights both the progress that has been made and the work that remains to be done.  Our organization recognizes this tension, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment. Juneteenth encourages us to continue to educate ourselves and others to understand our full and complex history.    Juneteenth also encourages us to acknowledge, value, and learn from diversity because it is our strength and makes us better. Juneteenth inspires us to speak out against all forms of bigotry today because silence is no longer an option. Juneteenth invites us to create a safe space for belonging and inclusion. Remember, Juneteenth is not just a historical milestone; it is a call to action for us to continue our work towards a just and equitable society.   Thank you all for your dedication to making the Oregon Department of Justice and our community a better place for all.   Ellen, Lisa and the AGO Office

Statement By Attorney General Rosenblum On The Supreme Court’s AHM Ruling “The Supreme Court did the right thing this morning to reject the AHM lawsuit. This does not mean that the legal battles over access to abortion medication are over. Our unwavering coalition of state attorneys general is committed to defending access to safe and effective medications used for abortion and miscarriage management—like mifepristone—and will continue to do so in the courts and in our states. “Let me be clear: The injunction we obtained last year from the federal court in Washington state maintaining the status quo for mifepristone remains in place and protects all Oregonians!” #mifepristone #reproductiverights #oregon

“For decades, Johnson & Johnson misled consumers about the potential harms of its talc powder products. Worse, they doubled down on the safety of those products, attacked credible scientific studies, refused to include warning labels on their products, and, at every turn, put profits ahead of lives. Thank you, Governor Tina Kotek, for signing SB 1561 and bringing the Environmental Restoration Council into being! This landmark environmental endowment is the product of a legislative team effort built upon the countless hours of work by Oregon DOJ attorneys and staff, among others, who secured for Oregon an historic nearly $700 million settlement with Monsanto. The result is a fund that centers equity and environmental justice to clean, restore, and protect Oregon’s natural and human worlds for generations to come. #environmentaljustice #oregon
