Engaging in and with the systems and structures that people in Helping Professions often work within has a real effect on well-being and mental health. The more significant the system's impact, the harder we must work to create the conditions for resilience for our clients and colleagues. One way THEI addresses this responsibility is by offering a monthly wellness reimbursement. Our team can submit monthly reimbursements of up to $100 for expenditures that contribute to their wellness, joy, or happiness. This month, I spent my funds on buying flowers. Flowers bring me joy, and I have become a decent amateur floral stylist. What are you doing, ongoingly, to support your team in creating the conditions for wellness and resilience? #disruptingsystemsofharm #caringforpeoplethatcareforpeople

About us
THEI is a nonprofit organization that funds and coordinates on-site degree-bearing college programs to incarcerated individuals in Tennessee prisons leading to Associate's degrees in Business Administration and Political Science. THEI works in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Correction and colleges and universities in Tennessee to make these academic opportunities possible. All credits, certificates and degrees earned behind bars are recognized by and transferable to any Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) college or university, as well as SACS-COC accredited private and public colleges and universities outside of Tennessee. Upon release, THEI encourages and helps formerly incarcerated students continue their academic pursuits on the college campus. The mission of the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative is to provide access to on-site degree-bearing higher education for individuals in Tennessee prisons; to support our students in leading meaningful lives in and outside prison; to prepare our students for successful re-entry; and to help our students become contributing members of our communities.

Battling burnout at the THEI office, one snack at a time.
There’s an important survey you should have staff complete if you’re a nonprofit organization that has Helping Professionals. It’s the all important snack survey. Vicarious trauma and burnout are high in our fields so we must constantly ask ourselves, “How are we taking care of the people that take of people?” Have we created a welcoming environment? Are we providing thoughtful touches and treats? At THEI we work to ensure we have at least one favorite snack on hand for each employee. Additionally, we intentionally work to create a beautiful and inviting environment. #disruptingsysystemsofharm #takecareofpeople

June is National Reunification Month, and THEI stands in support of reuniting families, which is a core part of our Transitional Programs portfolio. At the beginning of June, THEI's Transitional Programs team had an inspiring trip to NYC, meeting with some incredible NY-based organizations working in reentry services, including Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison, The New York Public Library Jail & Prison Services, The Marshall Project, and Exodus Transitional Community, Inc.. We also met poet Blue Jay Walker, who wrote us an insightful poem on the spot about reentry. A truly incredible trip!

The THEI office will be closed today, June 19th, in observance of Juneteenth. This significant day marks the end of slavery in the United States, commemorating when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865—two and a half years after it was signed. Juneteenth also serves as a reminder of the systemic injustices that persist to this day. THEI continues our mission to disrupt systems of harm and advocate for equity and freedom for all. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #SocialJustice #SystemicChange
