We are all are experiencing trauma right now, at all ages in all generations. But as we struggle, at least we are all together. No one is unscathed by the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. We must all pivot our businesses and ourselves, and lead our teams through the trauma. We’re lonely, grieving, depressed, sad, in shock, uncertain, anxious – in short, we are overwhelmed, exhausted, and scared. And we wonder constantly how and if we’re going to make it through.

I’m here to tell you that…

We’re lonely, grieving, depressed, sad, in shock, uncertain, anxious – in short, we are overwhelmed, exhausted, and scared. And we wonder constantly how and if we’re going to make it through.

I’m here to tell you that you ARE going to get through this. It won’t be easy, it’s going to hurt, and you’re going to be challenged more than you’ve ever been challenged in your life. But you will make it through so long as you cultivate this one crucial skill: resilience.

Also sometimes called “grit,” resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.” It’s a measure of how well you can bend, flex, and bounce back when you get knocked down. It’s a measure of your ability to triumph in adversity. And it’s all about shaping your mindset though training. We need this trait right now.

But fear not because science shows us that resilience is something you can cultivate and teach to others. So for your teams, families, clients, and the world let’s start with identifying and mastering the three components of resilience:

The Future of Work and the Workplace of the Future are huge topics of conversation. Yet, we’re still SOOO confused. We ask, what it will look like? What it will feel like? Where and how will we work? How many hours will we attend to work and how will we balance that with all our other life challenges? How will we handle disease, global challenges, technological changes (robots, AI, digital, etc.), and how will we survive as workers? It is an amazing question, especially today.

Because acknowledging that we’ve made some bad hires forces us to wake up and realize (i) we screwed up and, (ii) we definitely need to fire someone. Maybe ourselves, lol.

Most companies hold onto employees that aren’t the right fit for far too long. And that’s costing your business big time! Not just financially either…

Most companies hold onto employees that aren’t the right fit for far too long. And that’s costing your business big time! Not just financially either. Having the wrong employees on your staff hurts your productivity, erodes engagement and trust and your company culture, and ultimately inhibits results.

There is good news! You can avoid all that if you learn how to hire the RIGHT PEOPLE in the first place. And we do that by asking GREAT QUESTIONS during the interview.

  • 4 Reasons Why You Need to Care About Creating the Worker of the Future Right Now

    launchbox

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “The only constant in life is change.” While I’m no philosopher, he certainly got that right! Just compare our world now to Heraclitus’s time. Hell, a lot has changed since I entered the workforce – and I’m no dinosaur!

So if we know the world is constantly changing and will continue to change, why do we keep putting things off for the future? Why do we keep telling ourselves that when the workplace of the future finally “arrives” we’ll just…

So if we know the world is constantly changing and will continue to change, why do we keep putting things off for the future? Why do we keep telling ourselves that when the workplace of the future finally “arrives” we’ll just figure out how to adapt? Why are we not prioritizing developing our employees, our companies, and ourselves NOW so that we can make sure we WIN in the future?

As we’ve been talking about the worker of the future, you might have thought to yourself, “Okay Dan, I hear you, but why I should care about this right now? What’s so different about this moment in time that I should drop everything and shift my focus to worrying about a future that’s not even here yet?”

For starters, you don’t need to worry about the future if you’ve done the work to prepare for it. It’s only those who haven’t put in the time that need to worry! But to answer that question, to discuss why it’s so important that we care about creating the worker of the future right now, we have to look at a few things that are true about this moment in time.

Yet in my experience managers, who all should be leaders of one sort or another, are often the slowest to respond to changes in employee behavior and culture! That’s why so much of my work is focused on helping the generations connect in the workplace – because many of the older generations still don’t “get” their millennial and Gen Z coworkers and employees!

But the younger generation isn’t going away and taking their new ideas about work with them – in fact, more than 35% and even closer to 50% of Americans in the workplace are millennials! So if you are a manager or boss with millennial and Gen Z employees, it is critical that you get this right with your team! You must master the following new leadership traits and immediately start putting them into practice so you can continue to crush the competition in the years to come.

It’s been three years since Dan Negroni traded in his life as a “CEO for hire” and started pouring his energies into his millennial-centric consulting firm Launchbox (launchbox365.com). And it’s been one year since that new life crystallized into his book “Chasing Relevance,” his take on how to get people over their generational hang-ups. We caught up with the 52-year-old Del Mar resident in Launchbox’s Sorrento Valley office last week and reflected on generational misconceptions and the future of the workplace as we know it. (Some answers have been edited for length.)

Q: Complaints about millennials have been common fare for years now. Are the lessons being learned?

A: I think the world is overbaked with the negative soundtrack for millennials. Everyone tells me “Oh millennials suck.” That’s not been my experience. I’ve meet 5,000 this year and 95 percent of them are amazing. The No. 1 thing they want is to learn and grow. And the next generation is coming up, Generation Z. Never before have there been five generations in the workforce, but you do now with the Gen Z. So I don’t think people can avoid it anymore.

Q: You cite figures that millennials make up nearly 40 percent of the workforce. Why has it been so hard to assimilate such a large group?

A: Let’s call Gen Z and millennials “digital natives.” That’s really what the distinction is. We’ve always complained about the generation beneath us — Socrates was complaining about Plato. What’s different now is they’ve grown up in a world where their every need has been served by digital. Tinder, Uber Eats, you can order anything from Amazon and get it within a day. Everything is much easier. But then they get out of college and go into the workplace and everything is archaic and old and nothing’s easy.

Millennials are no longer happy with the stereotypes attributed to them over the past decade. They and their fast growing Gen Z counterparts have had it with labels. As a matter of fact, most millennials don’t even want to be called millennials. They are exiting their cocoon of their early 20s and headed towards full-blown adulthood, ready to take us on. Good for them! We need them.

They have been derided for being entitled and self-absorbed. However, millennials are now a little older, a little wiser, and making their way up the corporate ladder as they become comfortable in their own skin. They are taking on leadership roles as professionals, shedding their student loan debt, buying homes, starting families, and planning for the less-distant future.

What does this mean for the millennial generation and for all of us? A lot! What defining characteristics of their generation will stay and what will change as they evolve? And what aspects of their generational culture will they bring with them into their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond?

For years, attorneys have used traditional approaches to mentorship. The familiar, apprentice-type relationships where experienced, tenured lawyers provide advice to the new lawyers in their firm.

While mentorship programs are common in most firms, technology, an evolution of social norms, and the economy have changed the world and millennials comprise a new generation of lawyers that want something more, and they are willing to work for it. Millennials want to be heard and should be heard to enhance succession planning and firm sustainability.

Firms have good reason to listen to what millennials want. Millennials are the largest cohort of the workforce. In today’s world, millennials’ perspective, approach, and relevance are sorely needed for future law firm growth. However, millennials are also leaving the professional industries faster than ever before. Many firms already know they need to change how they conduct management and mentorship to help attract and retain millennial talent. They just don’t know how to ensure the next generation of law firms and law firm leaders can successfully emerge.

Enter reverse mentorship! Reverse mentorship is a concept that provides millennials and more experienced lawyers the platform to teach one another about the business and practice, and also to share new ideas openly. Through reverse mentoring, millennials can thrive and contribute in ways that will launch their careers like never before while still learning valuable lessons from the more experienced members of an organization. We know a few things about Millennials and Gen Z: they don’t trust lightly, they crave innovation and experiences, they love the entrepreneurial spirit, they express their need for growth, and have a tendency to disrupt and redefine industries.

So as a recruiter you’re in a tough spot; how to effectively attract talent right from the start. Old school recruiting tactics from 1994 don’t work as well these days getting Millennials and Gen Z talent to want to work for and stay with companies.

Don’t get me wrong, Millennials and Gen Z will happily work for companies. Recruiters just need to approach younger talent carefully. The secret: they need to connect with them on a deeper level, communicate in ways that feel organic, and tell them the “Real Deal” truth (connecting to them as individuals).

If it all sounds a bit coddling, it really isn’t. It’s about treating your audience the way they want to be treated: The Platinum Rule. Here are 11 ways recruiters can attract great Millennial and Gen Z talent.

    Be Authentic
Not every company can be everything to everyone. So be yourself. Don’t pretend. Not all companies have food, a full arcade, ping pong tables, video games and/or Massage Therapists (a la Facebook or Google). But for many companies, those perks wouldn’t even make sense to offer even if they could!

It is important that recruiters highlight perks that are relevant to the people in the industry they are hiring for. If the industry is technology, then having the latest technology and being a center of innovation and growth is a good sell. For a non-profit, it will be focusing on the tangible impact a candidate’s work will have. If it is the professional service industry, then experience and growth opportunities might be the right perks to highlight.

Millennials. Like it or not, they will make up most of your workforce in the next ten years. This portends a big problem for countless companies: a huge disconnect between millennials and boomers/Gen Xers in the workforce.

We send emails; they send snaps. We put our heads to work and do what we’re told; they opt to work remotely and creatively. The differences aren’t small; they are costing companies billions of dollars. 60% of millennials will leave their jobs in less than three years. Companies must address and understand this disconnect so they can disrupt outdated working models and adapt to the new way. Here are three ways to connect with millennials so you can disrupt your old model and write the future!

    1. Lead with unwavering transparency

Millennials wear their hearts on their sleeves. They tweet their opinions, Instagram their feelings and write Facebook statuses about who they will vote for and what causes they believe in. Technology has disrupted the way we communicate and has given millennials a voice 24/7. Your company must be transparent with what your mission is. Your why should be everywhere: in your office, on your website, on your Facebook page, etc.

60 % of millennials say ‘a sense of purpose’ is why they choose to work for their current employer, according to a Deloitte survey. If your company isn’t authentic and transparent on all fronts (social media, in person, online), this is hurting you. Be upfront about what your company stands for so you can actively connect and communicate with your millennials.

Because they will “crush it” by learning the number one life work/skill: Relationship Building.
Hollywood’s depiction of the sales profession certainly hasn’t done salespeople any favors. Moreover, all of us are guilty of stereotypes. Are you familiar with this one? Sales people are depicted as either magically gifted, manipulative or sleezy, shallow, pushy sheisters. All give inaccurate depictions of the profession for young millennials.

Those stereotypes have seeped into our perception of the sales profession as a whole. They are the ultimate connectors and influencers. Does this sound like a good thing or a bad thing to you?

To clear the air around sales and highlight the importance of sales as a profession, it is important to bust some of the common myths around sales and replace them with a healthy dose of reality. Here are some of the worst myths about sales and then the reality of why these skills are sorely being overlooked by the education system, Universities, Colleges, Graduate Programs, and the Workplace.
