Investigated the method by which myocarditic reoviruses induce IFN-β in primary cardiac myocyte cells. My research showed that Interferon Regulatory Factor 3 (IRF-3) was required for IFN-β induction in primary cardiac myocyte cultures and provided the first evidence that IRF-3 is required for viral induction of IFN-β for any virus in any cell type. Utilized/generated primary cardiac myocyte cultures, standard immortal cell lines, tranfection reagents for transfection of primary culture, luciferase reporter for IFN-β, co-immunoprecipitation, and RNA-shift assays. Awarded a GAANN Fellowship for academic/scholarly performance and the Leroy Coggins Research Award.
