  • The Real Immigration Crisis

    New American Economy

Given that 54 percent of our federal discretionary spending is allocated to national security, the tie between our economy and military strength is pronounced.1 The degree to which immigration underpins both is substantial and underrated. We are right to be discussing an immigration crisis, but we are looking the wrong way.

  • Custom Geochron Piece for Bill Nye

Bill Nye asked me to custom-fabricate a piece for his geochron, which is essentially a fancy clock. He calls the custom piece a "sun-button", because it displays the sun's position in its analemma. The stock sun-button came in opaque black, which is just a terrible depiction of the sun. Bill commissioned me to produce a translucent sun-button that could transmit light.

Bio/Med Tech encompasses a wide range of products and approaches that are used to maintain or improve health by treating diseases or medical conditions affecting humans. Judges representing the small business, startup, and health tech communities scored the applications, paying particular focus on value-based innovation (i.e. achieving better health outcomes without increasing costs or lowering costs without diminishing outcomes).

The four finalists were Enzyme Health, Jelly Medical, Clairvoyant, and Think & Zoom.

Standing in the new Dell Medical School Health Learning Building Auditorium surrounded by 60+ people and three very large screens displaying presentation slides, each finalist had five minutes to pitch their business to the audience.

After four presentations and four rounds of exceptional Q&A, the audience voted for their winner. The Austin Young Chamber is honored to announce the winner of the Austin Fast Start for Bio/Med Tech…JellyMedical!

Pitched by co-founders Meghan Fitzpatrick and Scott Hickle, JellyMedical is creating the world’s first bra for scar management, the JellyBra, made with medical-grade silicone to help reduce scar size and redness. JellyMedical took home the cash prize of $2,000 plus in-kind prizes valued at $5,000.
