Assistant Director of Community Health and Wellness

SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Community Health and Wellness is responsible, together with the Director of Community Health and Wellness, for fostering and promoting the vision and strategic direction of the department as it relates to the overall organizational mission, clinic initiatives and the community. The Assistant Director will be responsible for the operations and administration of Esperanza Health Center’s CHW team, as well as internal and external partnerships and collaborations to address social drivers of health.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure day-to-day operations of the CHW department, including approval of timesheets, completion and submission of monthly board reports, monthly reconciliation of department expenses, credit card reports, processing of check requests, and approval of vacation and sick time requests.
  • Together with the Director, develop and submit an annual department budget that is in line with health center priorities, projected income, and expenses essential to accomplishing programmatic goals, and avoids waste. Track monthly expenses to monitor any over or underspending from the projected budgets.
  • Develop and track grant budgets in collaboration and communication with the CHW team and EHC’s Financial Analyst. Assist the CHW team in grant narrative writing and reporting as needed.
  • Supervise department staff, including regular check-ins, staff assessments and evaluations, and working with HR to implement disciplinary measures if necessary.
  • Oversee resident engagement efforts such as the CORE Action Team, and ensure that community voice is brought into departmental decision-making and organizational strategic planning
  • Collaborate with the Operations team to track and approve requests for use of EHC facilities, especially the use of the classroom, gymnasium, and event space at EHC’s CORE building in Kensington and the classroom and gymnasium at EHC’s Hunting Park site.
  • Prepare agendas and lead regular internal and external meetings with interdepartmental and community partners as needed.
  • Serve as a point of contact for community partners utilizing EHC’s facilities to provide sports, youth, and other programming. This includes initial conversations with partners, development of MOUs and formal agreements, and checking in with partners at regular intervals to maximize benefits and minimize risks.
  • Monitor the health of current partnerships, proactively addressing deviations from partnership agreement and highlighting mutual successes.
  • Interdepartmentally collaborate with the Operations team, Social Service teams, and others as appropriate to oversee projects addressing the built environment as a social driver of health, including development of green space in EHC-owned lots, mural projects, and food security initiatives.
  • Collaborate with EHC’s Fitness team, Security Team, and Operations to bring community voice to strategic planning, mission and vision, and day-to-day use and operations of The CORE building
  • Management of RecDesk, our recreational management platform, for Community Health and Wellness programs and facilities rentals
  • Oversee departmental communications and marketing for programs, events, and other department activities

Education, Knowledge, Skills, And Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Public Health, Health Education, Community Health, Community Development, Social Work, or related field required; master’s degree in these or related fields preferred. Minimum 2-4 years of work experience in community/ healthcare settings required.
  • Knowledge of health care systems and related services, preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources, churches and community organizations, especially those in our North Philadelphia neighborhoods (Kensington, Fairhill, Hunting Park).
  • Ability to effectively supervise, manage, and motivate staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle many details and multiple priorities. Must show ability to organize, process, and verify details.
  • Strong cross-cultural skills.
  • Demonstrate strong spiritual leadership and be able to integrate Christian faith with health care.
  • Ability to effectively supervise, manage, and motivate staff.
  • Adept with Microsoft Office Suite and Google suite.
  • Knowledge and experience with implementing and evaluating/measuring the effectiveness of public health initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Sit at a desk doing computer and telephone work for prolonged periods; stand for long periods.
  • Lift 10-20 lbs.
  • Be able to work some nights and weekends.
  • Travel between EHC’s three clinic sites (Kensington, Fairhill, Hunting Park) as needed
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Attend community events and meetings outside of EHC and outside of regular business hours, as needed
