Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced ten Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards, and numerous other awards. The Data & Devices Department is part of the AI Research Lab, which has a long tradition of excellence in research and currently consists of more than 80 staff members with expertise ranging from computer science to experimental condensed matter physics.

We develop the devices and AI that will seamlessly integrate the physical world and human physiology into the future network of everything. We develop innovative materials, devices, and machine learning techniques that can continuously and non-invasively interface, sense, and actuate the physical world. We emphasize individual creativity and value both fundamental research contributions and advances that could potentially expand Nokia’s human-centric product offerings.

How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn

What you will learn and contribute to

As part of our team, you will:

  • Develop mathematical and simulation (MATLAB) frameworks for Physical Layer, MAC Layer, and positioning algorithms for Backscatter Radio systems
  • Implement practical communication and localization systems for industrial applications using software defined radios or all-digital radios
  • Integrate a multitude of testing modules ranging from benchtop instruments to low power microcontrollers and FPGAs
  • Deploy, test, and evaluate the developed systems in real world environments
  • Integrate, document, and interpret the results to facilitate the productization of the technology
  • Have the opportunity to become part of the core team transferring proof of concept technology to venture/incubation

Key Skills And Experience

What is Nokia looking for from me

Must have experience with:

  • RF localization/positioning theory, simulation (with MATLAB), and implementation
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for wideband communication and ranging/positioning systems (OFDM, FMCW, and others)
  • Implementation experience with Software defined radios (e.g. USRP) and/or all-digital radios (e.g. RFSoC)

Nice to have:

  • Hands-on experience with backscatter, RFID communication PHY and MAC
  • Experience with microcontrollers/FPGAs
  • Experience with RF instrumentation (spectrum analyzers, scopes, VNAs), and measurement automation
  • RF Device/module (e.g. power combiners, circulators, amplifiers) integration
  • Technical writing skills
