Data Governance Manager

Data Governance Managers bring expertise in standing up Data Governance programs to Allied. The Data Governance Manager will spearhead the development and implementation of robust data governance frameworks. They will collaborate cross-functionally with technical and business teams to ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards. The Data Governance Manager will use their expertise to establish policies, procedures, and best practices, fostering a culture of data stewardship and accountability. This highly impactful role will work autonomously to drive strategic initiatives that optimize data management processes and support organizational growth.

  • Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Developing Data Governance Frameworks (30%):

  • Design and implement data governance policies and procedures in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Define data governance roles and responsibilities across the organization, including members of the data governance team and data governance program.
  • Establish data quality metrics and mechanisms for monitoring and enforcing adherence to governance policies.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the data governance framework, identifying areas for improvement.

Cross-Functional Collaboration (20%):

  • Collaborate with IT, legal, compliance, information security, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and priorities.
  • Facilitate cross-functional meetings and workshops to gather input, resolve conflicts, and drive consensus on data governance decisions.
  • Serve as a liaison between technical teams and business units to ensure alignment of data governance initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Communicate updates and progress on data governance initiatives to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

Establishing Best Practices (30%):

  • Develop and document data management standards, guidelines, and best practices for data acquisition, storage, usage, and disposal.
  • Provide guidance and support to business units on data classification, data ownership, data lineage, and data lifecycle management.
  • Promote data literacy and awareness through the creation of training materials, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by soliciting feedback and implementing lessons learned from data governance initiatives.

Training and Education (20%):

  • Develop and deliver training programs on data governance principles, policies, and procedures for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Create educational materials, such as user guides and FAQs, to support self-service access to data governance resources.
  • Offer one-on-one coaching and support to data stewards and other key stakeholders to help them understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Organize workshops and lunch and learns to share success stories, lessons learned, and best practices in data governance.
  • Qualifications (Education, Experience, Certifications & KSA):
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field required.
  • 5+ years’ experience working in data management, data governance, or related field required.
  • 3+ years developing and implementing data governance frameworks enterprise wide.
  • Strong understanding of data governance principles, practices, and frameworks is required.
  • Certifications in data governance frameworks preferred (ex. DAMA-DMBOK, DGI)
  • Proficiency in data management tools and technologies, database systems, and data modelling concepts required.
  • Experience working with a modern, cloud data stack (Informatica, Amazon Glue, Boomi, dbt, Fivetran, Snowflake, AWS, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience with data catalogs, data lineage, and data quality platform and tools required.
  • Agile experience is preferred.
  • Requires strong business and technical acumen.
  • Strong analytical and product management skills required.
  • Strategic mindset with demonstrated experience in implementing data frameworks and driving continuous improvement.
  • Previous experience working in a start-up or on product development is preferred.
  • Proven ability to complete projects and achieve results in an ambiguous work environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently.
  • Familiarity with Object Oriented Analysis, Project Management, Business Analysis Methodology, and the SDLC.
  • Experience in the insurance or financial services industry preferred.
