Director of Tutoring

Primary Purpose:

The Director of the Primary Tutor Corps will design high impact tutorial programming and train leaders, teachers, and tutors on an ongoing basis to ensure primary tutoring programming is aligned with best, high-impact practices. The Director will also coordinate the selection and provision of tutoring curricular resources. They will be the primary manager for the Uplift Primary Tutor Corps.

The Director of Primary Tutoring Corps will work in partnership with the Learning Acceleration team’s literacy and math specialists and members of the curriculum and instruction team to ensure alignment and resource development. The Primary Learning Acceleration team will regularly meet with school leaders, teachers, and tutors to ensure stakeholders hold a common understanding of student achievement data and are equipped to respond quickly and effectively with well designed, evidence-based interventions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Hire and manage a 20-person tutor corps to provide additional reading and math support at high needs campuses
  • In collaboration with CMO and school leaders, design and manage reading and math focused high impact tutoring programs at ten schools, including measuring and reporting its ongoing effectiveness
  • In conjunction with the Deputy Chief of Primary Learning Acceleration and the Data team, devise a tutor performance bonus system that is aligned to STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) performance
  • Collect and present scholar outcome data to network leadership regularly; evaluate and suggest improvements to better meet scholar needs
  • Develop evaluation instruments and use data generated to guide program improvement and to monitor scholar progress
  • Oversee the processes and procedures required to ensure efficient and effective operation of the program (e.g., tutor job descriptions, coverage when tutors are absent, etc.) and ensure tutors have systems access and materials to be successful
  • Manage existing tutoring partnerships with third parties; ensure partners meet expectations and that schools are well served
  • Observe tutoring at assigned campuses and provides consistent feedback based on a predetermined set of expectations
  • Collaborate with diverse teams across the CMO to ensure alignment of tutoring with network curriculum and Uplift’s IB vision for excellence
  • Plan and facilitate professional development for leader groups, teachers, and tutors across schools based on instructional needs.
  • With Academic Directors, determine campus-specific programming; conduct regular check-ins and step backs to reflect and monitor progress and data
  • Serve as the community liaison representing Uplift in any local or state working groups on high-impact tutoring programs
  • Manage the growth and development of team members through hiring, performance management, goal setting, disciplinary action, and regularly scheduled meetings


Education, Experience, And/or Certification(s)

  • Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree (B.A. / B.S.) from an accredited four-year university, experience managing projects, and valid Texas teacher certificate are required. An advanced degree and fluency in Spanish is a plus. Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution (preferably in primary literacy or related field) preferred.
  • Experience Requirements: A minimum of three (3) years successful K-5 math and/or literacy teaching experience is required. Adult leadership experience preferred. Extensive knowledge of approaches to accelerate learning and increase a student’s depth of conceptual understanding is a plus.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Communication Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Mastery of both oral and written English with the ability to write general correspondence. Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence internal and external stakeholders. Excellent planning and logistics skills: the ability to envision a project’s holistic work-steps and properly sequence those activities into streamline implementation.
  • Bilingual Skills: N/A
  • Technology: Ability to use software to develop spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing. Ability to determine trends in data and develop action plans as needed.


Physical Demands: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Work Environment: Office out of CMO, though role requires frequent visits to select campuses across the DFW metroplex. Employee must retain reliable transportation and a valid Texas driver’s license.

Starting Salary: $90,000
