Merrick Community Services was founded on Saint Paul’s East Side in 1908 as the Christ Child Society, a part of a national model of settlement houses, which provided essential services to economically disadvantaged communities. Today, Merrick Community Services stands as one of the oldest nonprofit agencies in Ramsey County, with a history of assisting individuals and families transition from poverty and become self-sufficient and stable. The core programs of MCS are a premier Food Shelf, Meals on Wheels, Employment/Career Services, and Family and Community Services. MCS has a strong base of volunteers but would like this number to grow.

Description

Merrick Community Services is seeking a proven Grant Writer with a passion for advancing economic and racial equity and community wellness. The Grant Writer provides strategic grant work from prospecting, proposal development and writing to create successful applications for funding from corporations, foundations and government agencies. The Grant Writer works in partnership with Program Staff and the Director of Fundraising and Resource Development to meet ambitious fundraising goals to support an annual operating budget of $6 million.

The Grant Writer manages multiple proposals in all stages of development, is skilled at working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and at all levels of the organization.

Strategic Management

  • With support from the Leadership Team, lead all aspects of securing a minimum of $4 million in grant revenue
  • Create and manage a grant tracking system that is a shared planning document for the department and for the Leadership team.
  • Manage all aspects of grant submission, including working with finance and program on budgets and assembling all requirements.
  • Leads prospect research and serves as primary contact for management for all grants and some contracts depending on the tools required. Work with the program staff to Use a Go/NoGo Process for pursuing new revenue opportunities.
  • Participates in and Supports the Director of Resource and Fund Development and the Joint Marketing/Development Committee with a grants update at the regular established meetings.
  • Help to recruit new development committee members who have Development Experience in the non-profit sector.
  • Establishes and maintains a network or Grant Makers that provides opportunities to meet and form strong relationships with corporate, foundation and government entities. This work is in tandem with the leadership team
  • Provides Development Reports to the Executive Director, Director of Finance and Operations, Finance Committee, Joint Marketing/Development Committee, and the full Board of Directors
  • As the primary story teller at MCS meet with Program Staff to create stories about the people we serve. Recommend the placement of these stories on the appropriate platform; Social Media, Newsletters, proposals, LOIs and more.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree is desired, and four years of experience in similar positions including nonprofit development, fundraising, grant writing and grant reporting. Experience with donor management software/database is required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Experience securing government grants and federal funding.
  • A strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of Merrick Community Services.
  • Must be knowledgeable of Minnesota’s Philanthropic Community and other regional and national funders.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail in order to manage many different tasks and strategies simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop and cultivate positive relationships with foundations, corporations, local businesses, churches, individual donor prospects, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Ability to provide accurate and timely reports to the funders, and organization leadership
  • Proven ability to be self-directive, meet specific deadlines, and work independently, in the context of being part of a team.
  • Experience modeling respectful, inclusive, and responsible behavior that is consistent with the agency’s Mission, Vision, and Values and Equity Plan.
  • Ability to work with and engage a socio-economically, racially, and culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets and prepare financial reports.
  • Effective knowledge of appropriate technology and software to communicate effectively in print and electronically.
  • Passion to contribute to MCS as a key team member and supporter.

Working Conditions

This position requires:

  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to travel into the community to attend meetings
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as needed
  • Must pass a background check

Currently, MCS staff members work a four-day work week (Monday-Thursday/36 hours and with approval from supervisor can work from home one day per week.)
