The Role

SVP, Regulatory and Government Affairs is responsible to lead all legislative and regulatory developments that could impact BHE Renewables. This individual will lead the process to advocate for policies that align with its interests, and building relationships with key government officials, lawmakers, and relevant stakeholders. This includes government and regulatory affairs at the state and federal level, as well as administrative agencies. Responsible for developing and executing strategies to deliver growth through project acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and customer relationships. Additionally, the role is responsible for developing the strategy for positioning the business to be prepared to take advantage of new industry acquisitions or investments.


Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor all developments in the legislatures and agencies, disseminate information to executives to assist in the development of corporate policies related to legislation and regulations.
  • Serve as the executive leader to liaison with state and federal officials, energy companies, corporate communities, and associations, as well as activities with other BHE subsidiaries, and activities with industry trade associations.
  • Ensure that all regulatory compliance requirements are communicated internally and ensures all regulatory reporting and other compliance events are completed on time
  • Interpret and internally communicate all regulatory and market requirements
  • Direct and oversee marketing and sales policies and objectives involving regulatory compliance and regulations
  • Assess the impact of regulatory changes on business activities, communicate impacts to business units, and provide advice on implementing or modifying all business activities to ensure compliance.
  • Consult with Berkshire Hathaway Energy and BHE Renewables leadership regarding the political action committee, develop budget for executive political action committee, and screen all requests for contributions.
  • Assist in developing and participate in policy coalitions to promote the organization’s views on priority issues.
  • Provides advice, develops strategy, and presents testimony regarding regulatory issues.
  • Establishes and maintains regulatory and industry relationships regionally and nationally
  • Identifies potential opportunities that can be facilitated by legislative or regulatory action within the region, nation, and internationally for the businesses of BHE Renewables and Berkshire Hathaway Energy.
  • Provides knowledgeable and credible technical expertise related to industry issues in regulatory or other forums
  • Builds coalitions with counterparts at other utilities, other industries, industry groups, professional associations, and community organizations.
  • Develops strategic and operational plans for control, management, and improvement of regulation capabilities and for ensuring alignment with company goals and objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Governmental Policy or Business and postgraduate degree in Economics, Law, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 10 years of related work experience
  • Knowledge of the energy industry and energy industry regulations
  • Experience working at the state and federal level and preference in experience working across multiple states including CA, TX, NY, WV, and IA.
  • 5 years leadership experience in government and regulatory affairs preferred
  • Ability to provide accurate and timely descriptions and analysis of legislative and regulatory activities
  • Ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks
  • Diplomacy, strategic thinking, and deep understanding of political landscapes and regulatory processes in the US and globally.
  • Advanced influencing skills to persuade, direct, lead opinion, and negotiate with other leaders including high ranking government officials.
  • Advanced leadership skills to direct the activities of an individuals or teams toward the accomplished goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build sustained working relationships
