The City of Newport News, Virginia, is searching for an AssistantDirector of Strategies in the Waterworks Department. This Assistant Directorwill lead with integrity and confidence and will have considerable influence inthe overall administration, execution, and management of water utility services,especially overseeing and coordinating the financial and digital strategies ofthe regional water utility. The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Waterworksand work alongside the Assistant Director of Operations to enhance the existingoutstanding leadership and management with the goal of taking the department tothe next level. The Assistant Director of Strategies will lead a team of highlycompetent staff who are committed to providing the City and the region withexceptional water and ensuring the continued financial and digital integrity ofthe water system. The Assistant Director of Strategies will have three directreports who are the Administrators of the Business Services, StrategicGovernance, and Data Governance Divisions. In addition to internal leadership, the position will play acritical external role in engaging the community and establishing positiveworking relationships with regional stakeholders, the local media, andintergovernmental partners. Experience and Education Minimum requirements are any combination of education and experienceequivalent to a bachelor’s degree in business, public administration,engineering, or a related field and seven to ten years of progressivelyresponsible experience in water or wastewater utility management. A minimum offive years of supervisory experience is also required. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree and experience in a complex water utility. Demonstrated experience ofleadership, employee engagement, oversight of complex utility programs,successful adaptation to new technology, and helping achieve organizational anddigital goals are preferred and should be addressed in the cover letter orresume. Compensation and Benefits The expected hiring range is $125,000 –$145,000, depending on qualifications, with an excellent benefits package.Learn more about our options and employee-based benefits here.
